Cappadocia is a historical region in Central Anatolia. Today's tourist area centers on Nevşehir province, in central Türkiye, with Kayseri, Aksaray and Niğde also included. Wind and rain have carved its soft volcanic rock into fairy chimneys, valleys and rock formations. Early Christian communities cut churches, monasteries and underground cities into the same stone. Göreme National Park and Cappadocia were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, and the Göreme Open Air Museum holds more than 30 carved churches and chapels, some with frescoes from the ninth to eleventh centuries.
Travelers come for sunrise balloon flights over Göreme and for hiking in the Ihlara Valley, where rock-cut churches sit along the way. Underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı were dug as shelters during periods of persecution. Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is the region's main airport. The climate is continental, with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Spring and autumn are the milder months in between.

How often are Cappadocia balloon flights cancelled?
Flights depend on the wind, and cancellations happen in every season, more often in winter. Allow at least two mornings.
How many days do you need in Cappadocia?
Two to three days covers a balloon flight, the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a valley walk and an underground city.
When is the best time to visit Cappadocia?
April, May, September and October bring mild days for walking. Winter can be snowy and summer afternoons are hot.
Is a Cappadocia balloon flight worth it?
For most visitors, yes: the sunrise view of the valleys from above is the signature experience. Book with an operator that reschedules for wind, and keep a spare morning.
Should I fly or take the bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia?
Fly to Kayseri or Nevşehir for about 1.5 hours in the air. The overnight bus is cheaper but takes most of a day and night, which cuts into your time on the ground.
