Göreme is a small town (belde) in Nevşehir Province, in Central Anatolia, about 10 km from Nevşehir city centre. It sits among the valleys of Cappadocia, where tall eroded rock cones called fairy chimneys rise out of the surrounding land. Many rock formations nearby were hollowed out in the Middle Ages to make churches, houses and underground cities.

The town was a centre of early Christianity, so it has the most painted churches, hermitages and monasteries in Cappadocia. The Göreme Open Air Museum, a cluster of rock-cut churches inside Göreme National Park, is the best-known site. The park and the rock sites of Cappadocia were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Tourism is now the main livelihood here, and almost all villagers work in it. Hot air balloon flights over the valleys are the most famous activity, so plan early mornings. The nearest airports are Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport and Kayseri Airport, and long-distance buses connect the town with towns across Turkey.
