Gaziantep, also called Antep, is a city in south-central Türkiye, on the Sajur River near the Syrian border. The city centre has about 1.9 million people. Its cuisine has roughly 300 dishes, and its kebabs, meat stews and sweets are especially famous. UNESCO named Gaziantep a City of Gastronomy in 2015. Pistachios run through local cooking, and the city handles about 80% of Turkey's pistachio processing.
Two days covers the basics. Spend one in the old city, where the Gaziantep Castle, the Coppersmiths' Bazaar and the Zincirli Bedesten are all within reach, and eat at kebab, kofta and baklava places between sights. Give the second day to the Gaziantep Museum of Archaeology and the Hasan Süzer Ethnography Museum. Summers are very hot and dry, and winters are cool, wet and sometimes snowy, so spring and autumn suit walking the streets. The Zeugma Mosaic Museum and the Yesemek open-air museum lie outside the city, so plan them as a separate trip.
Gaziantep in five
- Read the border advice before you bookFCDO advises against all travel within 10 km of the Turkey-Syria border, and roads toward the border can close at short notice. Check the current map and keep your plans to the city and its main routes.FCDO regional risks
- Give the Zeugma Mosaic Museum a morningThe ministry lists the museum open daily, 8:30 to 17:00, with the ticket office closing at 16:30. It houses mosaics from the ancient city of Zeugma and takes about two hours.Ministry page
- Eat your way through the old cityGaziantep's food culture is the reason to come: baklava, katmer, kebabs and beyran for breakfast. Eat where locals queue, and go early for breakfast dishes that sell out.
- Check the castle before you plan on itThe ministry lists Gaziantep Castle as closed on its page at the time of checking. Look before you plan the old-city walk around it.Castle page

Is Gaziantep safe to visit?
The city is outside the zone FCDO advises against, which covers areas within 10 km of the Syrian border, but conditions change. Read the current government advice before you book.
Is Gaziantep worth visiting?
Yes for food and the Zeugma mosaics. It is a working city with few resort comforts, and the heat in summer is intense, so choose spring or autumn.
How many days do you need in Gaziantep?
Two days: one for the museum and old city, one for food stops and bazaars. Add a day if you plan a trip to Şanlıurfa or Mount Nemrut.
What should you eat in Gaziantep?
Baklava with local pistachios, katmer, kebabs and beyran for breakfast. Gaziantep is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, so eat widely and stay for lunch.
When is the best time to visit Gaziantep?
April, May, October and November for pleasant temperatures. July and August are extremely hot, and winters are cool and wet.
