Antalya is a large city on the southwest coast of Anatolia in Türkiye, and the capital of Antalya Province. It sits between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean, and it is often called the country's capital of tourism. Its old town, Kaleiçi, is a walled quarter of narrow cobbled streets, Ottoman houses and a harbor lined with hotels, bars and restaurants. The Yivli Minaret, the minaret of a Seljuk mosque decorated with dark blue and turquoise tiles, has become the city's symbol.

People come for the old town, the beaches and the ancient sites nearby. Konyaaltı and Lara are the best-known city beaches. Perge lies near the city, and the Aspendos Theatre, built in the 2nd century AD, is in Serik district, about an hour's drive from Antalya. Summer is hot and dry, with sea temperatures reaching about 27°C, while winters are mild and rainy. Tourist areas are busiest in summer, but the city has tourism all year.

Antalya in five

  1. Stay in Kaleiçi for the old townThe walled quarter above the harbor has lanes of Ottoman houses and small guesthouses. Beaches are a short tram or taxi ride away.
  2. Visit the Roman sites earlyPerge and Aspendos are open-air and very hot by midday in summer. Go at opening.
  3. Check your visa status before booking flightsWhether you need an e-Visa for Türkiye depends on your passport. Check first and apply only on the official site, then book the flight to Antalya.Türkiye e-Visa
  4. Use the airport tram or a taxiA tram line links Antalya Airport with the city, so check where your flight lands and where the stop is. Taxis are simpler with luggage and late arrivals.
  5. Rent a car only for the coastKaleiçi, the museum and the beaches in town work without a car. Hire one for Phaselis, Olympos and the Lycian coast, where public transport is thin.

Rules for Antalya, checked

  • Check whether you need a visa or e-visa for Türkiye before you book, on your government's foreign travel advice page for Türkiye.
  • Antalya Museum was under reconstruction as of autumn 2025, so confirm it is open with the museum or the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality before you plan a visit.
  • Buy a Halkkart for city buses and trams. The older Antkart was cancelled in 2009, and cash remains a payment option.
  • Remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and knees when you enter mosques such as the Yivli Minaret Mosque; women may need a headscarf.

Antalya FAQ

When is the best time to visit Antalya?

April, May, October and November, when it is warm enough to swim but not too hot for the ruins. July and August highs pass 34°C.

Is Kaleiçi a good place to stay in Antalya?

Yes, for history and restaurants. For long beach days, Konyaaltı or Lara put you on the sand.

How many days do you need in Antalya?

Three days covers Kaleiçi, a beach day and a Roman site. Stay longer for boat trips and the Lycian coast.

Do you need a car in Antalya?

Not for the old town, beaches and city sights, which work on foot and tram. A car helps for the Lycian coast and remote coves, though group tours cover Perge and Aspendos.

Is Antalya worth visiting in winter?

Yes for sightseeing: days are mild, ruins are quiet and snow sits on the Taurus Mountains. The sea is cool, and some beach hotels and boat trips close until spring.
