Trabzon is a port city on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Türkiye, and it has been a trading city for centuries. Its best-known building is the Hagia Sophia, a Byzantine-era church with surviving interior painting in the old town on the hillside. The most striking sight is Sümela Monastery, a Greek Orthodox monastery built into a cliff face in the Altındere Valley outside the city.

Trabzon suits travelers who want history, local food and green valleys more than a beach stay. Rain is common on this coast, so keep one or two flexible days and plan the highland trips around dry weather. Late spring through early autumn is the most practical window for the valleys and lakes. Plan two to three days for the city and Sümela. Add a day or two for the highland lakes, which needs a car, a driver or a tour.

Trabzon in five

  1. Go to Sümela earlyThe Ministry lists the monastery as open daily 08:00 to 17:00, with ticket sales to 16:30. Fog and rain are common, so check the Ministry page for notices before you drive up.Sümela hours
  2. Visit Hagia Sophia outside prayer timesTrabzon's Ayasofya is a working mosque. Dress modestly, remove your shoes and avoid prayer times so that you can see the interior without disturbing worshippers.
  3. Rent a car or join a tour for the highlandsUzungöl and the high pasture villages lie along winding mountain roads. Tours are easiest; a car suits drivers who are comfortable with fog and narrow lanes.
  4. Fly in, often via IstanbulTrabzon is far from the rest of Türkiye by road, so most visitors fly, usually via Istanbul. Book flights early for July and August.Istanbul
  5. Pack for rain in every seasonThe Black Sea coast is one of the wettest parts of Türkiye. Carry a rain shell even in July, and keep a spare dry day for Sümela and the highlands.

Trabzon FAQ

Is Trabzon worth visiting?

Yes for Sümela, the Black Sea highlands and a quieter side of Türkiye. It is less a classic sightseeing city than a base for mountain and valley trips.

How do you get to Sümela Monastery from Trabzon?

By tour, taxi or rental car, about an hour by road. The Ministry lists the monastery as open daily 08:00 to 17:00, so go early and check for notices.

How many days do you need in Trabzon?

Two days cover Sümela and the city. A third day allows Uzungöl or another highland valley, weather permitting.

Is Trabzon rainy?

Yes, the Black Sea coast is one of the wettest parts of Türkiye, with rain in every season. Pack a rain shell and keep a spare day for Sümela.

When is the best time to visit Trabzon?

June to September for the warmest, brightest weather in the highlands. Even then, fog and showers are common, and spring and autumn can be wet.
