Datça Peninsula

Datça Peninsula

Come for swimming bays, pine-covered coves and the ancient Greek city of Knidos at the peninsula's tip.

Datça Peninsula is a narrow finger of land in Muğla Province, in southwestern Turkey, where the Aegean and Mediterranean meet. The coast has small bays with pine forests running down to the water, and olive groves and almond orchards lie inland. The town of Datça sits on the peninsula's northern side. The ruins of Knidos, an ancient Greek port city, lie near the tip. Knidos is a main reason to come, along with the swimming and the quiet.

A trip here is a slow coastal one. Summer is the busy season for swimming and boat trips along the coast. Spring and autumn suit walking. The almond trees flower in late winter, usually in February, and the peninsula is quietest outside summer. Plan at least four or five days to see the town, a few bays and Knidos without rushing.

Datça has no airport. Fly into Dalaman or Bodrum-Milas and continue by car, or by bus or dolmuş to the main towns. A car gives you the most freedom for the coves.

How many days do you need in Datça?

Four or five days covers the town, a boat trip along the coast and a day at the ancient city of Knidos. Add more if you want to walk, stay in a village or visit the coves at a slower pace.

Do you need a car in Datça?

A car is useful for the coves and the villages, since buses do not reach most of them. The town itself can be explored on foot.

When is the best time to visit Datça?

May to June and September to October suit a trip best, with warm weather and the sea at a comfortable temperature. July and August are hot and often windy.
