Marmaris is a port city and resort on the Turkish Riviera, on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Türkiye in Muğla Province. Most visitors come for the beaches and watersports, and the town is a major package-holiday destination, especially for British visitors. Three marinas sit in the bay, and yacht trips and day cruises take in nearby islands, including Sedir Island, which has soft white sand and a protected beach. Dalaman Airport is about one hour's drive east and is the main air access point.
The old town sits on a hill running out to the sea and is the oldest part of town. Marmaris Castle, built in the Ottoman period, is now a museum with seven galleries. It was one of the few structures left undamaged by the 1957 earthquakes that destroyed most of the town. Ferries run to the Greek island of Rhodes in about 45 minutes. Summers are hot and dry, with heatwaves in July and August, and October stays warm and bright. Rain is most likely from November onward.
Marmaris in five
- Book gulets and day boats through a licensed operatorAsk what the price covers (meals, fuel, port fees), the route and the group size. Day boats often leave from the marina by mid-morning.
- Fly to Dalaman and pre-book the transferDalaman is the closest big airport, roughly 1.5 hours by road. Pre-book a shuttle for late arrivals, since dolmuş and bus connections thin out in the evening.
- Plan Rhodes as a day away from gulet bookingsFerries cross to Rhodes in Greece in the warm season. Do not stack it with a boat day or the Dalyan trip, because passport control and the timetable fix your hours at both ends.
- Choose İçmeler or Turunç for quiet nightsİçmeler has a beach a short boat or dolmuş ride from town, and Turunç sits in a cove with less traffic. Pick them over the main strip if you want to sleep.
- Spend a day at Dalyan and KaunosRiver boats, mud baths and the Kaunos rock tombs lie about 1.5 hours away, and Kaunos is on the Aegean MuseumPass.Dalyan

Is Marmaris worth visiting?
Yes for boat days, coves and an easy resort base, less so if you want an untouched village. It is livelier and more package-oriented than Kaş or Kalkan.
How many days do you need in Marmaris?
Three days cover a boat day, the castle and old town, and an easy beach day. Four or five lets you add Dalyan or Datça.
Can you take a ferry from Marmaris to Rhodes?
Yes, in the warm season. Carry your passport, ask the operator for the day's timetable, and leave a flexible day in case wind cancels the crossing.
Where is the best place to stay near Marmaris?
Town for the marina, İçmeler for a calmer beach, Turunç for a quiet cove. All three are within a short boat or dolmuş ride of each other.
When is the best time to visit Marmaris?
May, June, September and October. July and August are very hot, with many boats and beaches full, and some places close from about November to March.
