Pamukkale is a site in Denizli Province in southwestern Türkiye. The name is Turkish for "cotton castle." Thermal water carries calcium carbonate down the slope, and as it runs it leaves a white mineral crust. Over time that crust has built up into terraces, ledges and shallow pools. The terraces are the main draw, and Hierapolis adds ancient ruins to the visit.

Hierapolis sits on the hill above the terraces. It was a Greco-Roman spa city, and its remains include a theater, a large necropolis and the Ancient Pool, where fallen columns lie under warm water. Plan at least half a day to see both the terraces and Hierapolis. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the site, since summer heat is strong on the open slopes. Denizli is the nearest large city.

Pamukkale in five

  1. Plan around the gate closing timesThe Ministry lists the site as open daily from 08:00 to 18:00. The south and north gates close at 18:00, the pedestrian entrance at 17:00, and ticket sales stop at 17:00.How to visit Hierapolis
  2. Carry your shoes on the white terracesThe travertine channels are crossed barefoot, so bring a bag for your shoes, a towel and sunglasses, because the white stone reflects heat and glare. Follow the posted signs on which terraces are open.
  3. Compare a pass with single ticketsThe Aegean MuseumPass costs €95 for 7 days and lists Hierapolis, its museum, Laodikeia and Ephesus. It pays off only if you add several sites in a week.Aegean MuseumPass
  4. Pay separately for the Ancient PoolThe Ministry says the Mediterranean MuseumPass is not valid at the Hierapolis Ancient Pool, which needs its own ticket. Ask at the ticket office whether your pass applies.
  5. Stay a night for the quiet hoursDay-trip coaches leave by mid-afternoon, so the terraces are calmer near closing. A base in the village or Karahayıt puts you inside that window.Where to stay in Pamukkale

Pamukkale FAQ

Is Pamukkale worth visiting?

Yes, if you pair the terraces with Hierapolis and give it more than a coach stop. The white stone is striking at opening and near closing, while the Roman city, necropolis and theater fill a second hour.

Can you swim at Pamukkale?

Not in the travertine channels, which are for wading barefoot. Swimming is at the Hierapolis Ancient Pool, on a separate ticket, or in thermal pools at Karahayıt and village hotels.

Are all the pools full of water?

No. Water is channeled between terrace sections, so some pools are dry on any given day. Expect the most water on the terraces that are currently open to walkers, and follow the signs.

How long do you need in Pamukkale?

Three to four hours cover the terraces and Hierapolis highlights. Add the museum and the Ancient Pool for a half day, and a night if you want the site at opening or sunset.

When is the best time to visit Pamukkale?

April, May, September and October. July and August are very hot on white stone with no shade, so go at opening or late afternoon and keep midday for the pool.
