Gallipoli Peninsula

Gallipoli Peninsula

Battlefield cemeteries and memorials on the Dardanelles, where the 1915 Gallipoli campaign was fought.

Gallipoli Peninsula lies on the western side of the Dardanelles strait in northwestern Türkiye, in Çanakkale Province. In April 1915, Allied forces landed here, starting the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War, which ran for about eight months. Today the peninsula is a historical national park, with cemeteries, memorials and trench remains across the ground where the fighting took place. The main sites are Anzac Cove, Lone Pine, Chunuk Bair and Cape Helles, each linked to a different phase of the campaign.

The peninsula is mainly a history trip, so it suits anyone who wants to understand this campaign and what it cost. Allow at least a full day for the main sites, and expect a lot of walking on uneven ground with little shade. Spring and autumn are the mildest seasons, and summer is hot. Çanakkale and Eceabat are the usual bases for a visit.

Gallipoli Peninsula in five

  1. Choose a guided tour or a self-driveThe sites are spread across the peninsula and the stories sit in the details. A guide adds context and handles the order; a car gives flexibility. Either way, start early and allow a full day.Compare tours
  2. Register for Anzac Day servicesFor the 2026 Anzac Day service, Australia's veterans department required a free individual attendance pass and photo ID, and a tour company could not register for you. 2027 arrangements are still being planned.DVA Gallipoli page
  3. Treat the cemeteries as memorialsThe sites are war graves. Dress modestly, keep voices low, stay on paths and do not climb on monuments or collect objects.
  4. Add Troy on the Çanakkale sideThe ministry lists the Troy archaeological site and the Troy Museum open daily, 8:30 to 17:30, on the Asian side of the strait, which makes a second day from Çanakkale.Troy page
  5. Plan the ferry and road transfersA ferry crosses the Dardanelles between Çanakkale and Eceabat, and roads from Istanbul and Edirne reach the peninsula. Check ferry times and allow a buffer, especially in summer.Getting around
