Bodrum is a harbor town on the Aegean coast of southwestern Türkiye, in Muğla Province. Visitors come for its castle, its waterfront and the bays nearby. Bodrum Castle was built in the 15th century by the Knights of St John and now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Below it, yachts and traditional wooden gulets fill the marina, and the lanes of the old town climb the slope toward the castle walls.
The ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, lie within the town, and an ancient theater sits a short walk from the waterfront. The old town is easy to cover on foot. From the center, dolmuş minibuses and taxis reach the bays for swimming and boat trips. Three nights gives time for the castle, the theater and one day at a bay. The sea is warm enough for swimming from late spring to early autumn.
Bodrum Town in five
- Visit Bodrum Castle in the morningThe ministry lists the Museum of Underwater Archaeology inside the castle open daily, 8:30 to 17:30, with the ticket office closing at 17:00. Go early, before the heat, and keep the afternoon for the sea.Ministry page
- Add the ancient theater, which is freeThe ministry lists the Bodrum Antique Theatre as free, open 8:30 to 17:30 and closed on Mondays. It is a short ride from the harbor and takes under an hour.Theatre page
- Pick a side of the castle for the beachThe castle divides the town into a western and an eastern bay. The western side has the long promenade and sunset restaurants, and the eastern side is busier around the marina and the bars.
- Book rooms away from the bar streetsThe bar and club streets near the marina are loud until late in July and August. If you sleep early, choose a room a few streets back or in a quieter village on the peninsula.Bodrum Peninsula

Is Bodrum worth visiting?
Yes for a beach and boat holiday with a castle and a walkable harbor. It is busy and loud in peak season, so choose a quieter village on the peninsula if you want calm evenings.
How many days do you need in Bodrum Town?
Three to four days: one for the castle and theater, the rest for beaches, a boat day and long dinners. Add days if you want to explore the peninsula.
Is Bodrum Castle worth the entry?
Yes if you like shipwreck finds and harbor views; the museum inside is the point. Go early and allow two to three hours, and check the ministry page for the day's hours.
Where is the best beach near Bodrum Town?
The town beaches are small and busy, so most visitors head to Gümbet, Bitez or villages on the west coast by minibus. Pick a bay by facilities and crowd level.
When should you avoid Bodrum?
July and August if you dislike heat, crowds and late-night noise. Before May the sea is cool and some seasonal places are closed, so May, June and September fit best.
