Germany

Visit Germany for big cities, Rhine castles and vineyards, the Bavarian Alps and Christmas markets, all linked by fast trains.

Germany is a federal republic in Central Europe with 16 states. Berlin is its capital and largest city, and nine countries border it. From the North Sea and Baltic coasts in the north to the Alps in the south, the country crosses forested uplands. The Zugspitze, on the Austrian border, is the highest point at about 2,962 meters. The Rhine, one of Europe's busiest waterways, flows from Switzerland to the North Sea past castles, old towns and vineyards.

The ICE high-speed network links major cities and neighboring countries, with trains reaching up to 300 km/h. Berlin has the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, and Munich is a base for day trips to Neuschwanstein Castle and the Bavarian Alps. Trier and Cologne began as Roman legion camps and towns, and Roman ruins are still visible in several of them. Winters are overcast with little precipitation, while summers can be hot and dry or cool and rainy, so pack for changeable weather. Late spring to early autumn suits hiking, and December brings Christmas markets.

Five things to know before Germany

  1. Consider the Deutschlandticket

One monthly ticket covers regional trains, buses and city transport nationwide. It is a subscription, so cancel it before the next month starts. Getting around

  2. Book ICE saver fares early

Long-distance saver fares on DB rise as trains fill. A seat reservation costs extra and is worth it on Fridays and Sundays.

  3. Carry some cash

Cards work in most places now, but bakeries, market stalls and some bars still prefer cash.

  4. Shops close on Sundays

Supermarkets in big stations stay open; museums and beer gardens do too.

  5. Book December and Oktoberfest rooms early

Oktoberfest ends in early October and the Christmas markets open in late November. Rooms go months ahead for both. Christmas markets

Rules for Germany, checked
Germany is in the Schengen area, so non-EU visitors must check whether they need a visa on the Federal Foreign Office site, auswaertiges-amt.de.
Schengen entry requires a passport valid for at least three months after your planned departure. EU citizens can enter with a valid ID card.
Most shops close on Sundays and public holidays, so plan groceries for those days.
Return bottles and cans marked with a Pfand deposit to shops or reverse vending machines to get the deposit back.
Dial 112 for police, fire or an ambulance anywhere in Germany.

Germany FAQ

Is the Deutschlandticket worth it for visitors?

If you use regional trains and city transport for most of a month, yes. It does not cover ICE or IC trains, and it is a subscription you must cancel.

Are German trains on time?

Less often than their reputation suggests. Long-distance trains run late regularly, so leave a buffer before flights and tight connections.

When are the Christmas markets?

Most open in late November and run until just before or just after Christmas. Munich's and Nuremberg's are the busiest on weekends.

What is the best way to see Germany without a car?

By train. ICE links the big cities, regional trains reach towns such as Rothenburg and Füssen, and the Deutschlandticket covers regional lines. Pick two or three bases and make day trips.

How many days do you need in Germany?

A first trip fits in 7 to 10 days: three in Berlin, three in Munich with a Neuschwanstein day trip, and the rest on the Rhine or in Saxony. Each extra city adds a train day.
