Augsburg is a university city in the Bavarian part of Swabia, about 50 km west of Munich, and the third-largest city in Bavaria. The Romans founded it in 15 BC as Augusta Vindelicorum, so it ranks among Germany's oldest cities. Between the 15th and 16th centuries it was a major trading and banking centre, and the Fugger and Welser banking families dominated European finance from here. The Fuggerei, founded by Jakob Fugger, is the oldest social housing estate still in use in the world, and residents still live there.
Walk the historic centre (Altstadt) to see the Renaissance Town Hall and its Golden Hall, and the Perlachturm bell tower beside the Town Hall square. The medieval canals in the Lech district, crossed by many bridges, once powered workshops and water pumps, and they form part of a water system listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 6 July 2019. Snow usually falls from January and stays until mid-March, and autumn mornings are often foggy.
Augsburg in five
- See the Fuggerei early in the dayThe Fuggerei is a walled social settlement founded in 1521 that is still lived in, and visitors enter through a ticketed gate with a small museum. Check the Fuggerei's own page for current hours and fees before you go.
- Take the train from Munich in about 30–45 minutesRegional and ICE trains run all day, so Augsburg works as a day trip or an overnight. Buy a single ticket or use a regional day ticket if you also plan Ulm or Füssen.Munich travel guide
- Climb the Perlachturm for the old-town viewThe tower beside the Rathaus gives a short, central look over the roofs, and the Golden Hall of the Rathaus is the finest room in the city. Check opening days, since both close on some weekdays.
- Follow the water towers and canalsAugsburg's historic water management system is on the UNESCO list, and the Lech canals run through the quarter near the Rotes Tor. A slow loop of the canals is a quieter alternative to the main shopping street.
- Pair it with the Romantic RoadAugsburg sits on the Romantic Road route between Würzburg and Füssen. By train, a Munich base reaches both Augsburg and Füssen in a day each, so no need to move hotels.Füssen travel guide

Is Augsburg worth visiting?
Yes, for travelers who like Renaissance civic architecture and want fewer crowds than Munich. The Rathaus, the Fuggerei and the canals each take an hour or two, and none of them is hard to reach on foot.
Is Augsburg a good day trip from Munich?
Yes. Trains take about 30 to 45 minutes, so you can leave after breakfast and be back for dinner. Spend the day on the Rathausplatz, the Fuggerei and the canal quarter.
What is the Fuggerei?
A walled settlement founded in 1521 by the Fugger family to house needy local residents. It is still inhabited, with a museum and a small entry fee, and is open to visitors during the day.
Is Augsburg on the Romantic Road?
Yes. The route runs from Würzburg through Rothenburg and Augsburg to Füssen, so Augsburg is a convenient middle stop by train between Munich and the Allgäu.
Should you stay overnight in Augsburg?
Yes if you want the canal quarter quiet after dark and a cheaper hotel than Munich. Skip it if you have only one day and plan Munich or Füssen; a day trip covers the main sights.
