Bamberg is a town in Upper Franconia, in northern Bavaria. It lies on the Regnitz River, and its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The cathedral sits on a hill above the centre and holds the Bamberg Rider, a stone statue of a knight. Below it, the Old Town Hall stands on an island in the river, reached by bridges from both banks. In the Little Venice district, the houses along the canals were once fishermen's homes.
Rauchbier is the beer to try here. Its malt is dried over an open beechwood fire, which gives the beer a smoky flavor. Taverns and breweries across the old town serve it. The old town is compact, and the cathedral, the town hall and Little Venice are all reachable on foot from one another. A day trip covers the main sights, while an overnight stay gives you time to see the riverside in the evening.
Bamberg in five
- Stop between Berlin and Munich, not at the endBamberg sits on the high-speed line between Berlin and Munich, so an ICE stop adds a night without extra distance. The direct train from Berlin takes about 3 hours, from Munich about 2.
- Taste Rauchbier where it is brewedSmoked beer is the local specialty and the one regional taste worth planning around. Brewery taverns serve it with Franconian dishes, and you can ask for a small first glass to see if you like the smoke.
- Visit the cathedral and the Bamberg HorsemanThe Kaiserdom stands on the hill above the old town, and the Horseman statue inside is its best-known work. Combine it with the Domberg and a walk down to the river.
- See Little Venice from the bank, not just the bridgeThe fishermen's houses along the Regnitz are best viewed from the Obere Brücke or from the riverside path. Go in the late afternoon when the light warms the half-timbered walls.
- Plan a night, not just an afternoonDay-trippers leave by evening, and the tavern lanes fill with locals after dark. A single night in the old town buys a quiet morning on the Domberg before the groups arrive.Where to stay in Germany

Is Bamberg worth visiting?
Yes, for its UNESCO old town, the cathedral and Rauchbier. It is smaller and quieter than Nuremberg or Würzburg, so it suits a slow stop rather than a long list of sights.
Is Bamberg a day trip from Nuremberg?
Yes, about 40 minutes by regional train. You can see the old town and the cathedral in a few hours, but staying a night gives you a tavern evening and quiet morning light on the river.
What is Rauchbier?
A beer brewed from malt dried over beechwood fire, giving a smoky taste. It is Bamberg's specialty and sold in the city's brewery taverns. It can taste like bacon, so ask for a small first glass.
How many days do you need in Bamberg?
One night is enough for the cathedral, the town hall and an evening in a tavern. Add a second day only if you plan Franconian Switzerland or a longer stop on the Berlin-Munich line.
Can you reach Bamberg without a change?
Yes from Berlin, Munich and Nuremberg on the main ICE line. Check the timetable, as not every fast train stops here, and some regional links run less often on weekends.
