Würzburg is a city of about 126,000 people (2023 estimate) on the River Main in Lower Franconia, northern Bavaria. It is the second-largest city in Franconia after Nuremberg. Allied bombing on 16 March 1945 destroyed most of the old city center, and the old town was rebuilt afterward, so most of its churches are reconstructions.

The main draw is the Würzburg Residence, a Baroque palace built from 1720 to 1744 for prince-bishops and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. Balthasar Neumann designed it mainly, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo painted its ceiling fresco. The Festung Marienberg, a fortress on the hill west of the center, has views over the town and the surrounding hills. The Residence, the Juliusspital and the Bürgerspital all have historic wine cellars open for tastings. InterCityExpress trains from the Hauptbahnhof run to Frankfurt, Munich, Nuremberg, Cologne and Hamburg. Plan at least a day for the Residence and the fortress, and a second for the cathedral, the museums and a wine tasting.

Würzburg in five

  1. Visit the Residenz early in the dayThe baroque palace has a famous ceiling fresco by Tiepolo over its main stair, and visits are timed. Check the Bavarian palace administration's page for hours and tours.
  2. Walk the Old Main Bridge at duskThe stone bridge is lined with statues, and locals gather with a glass of local wine. It is the best place to end the day, with the fortress lit above.
  3. Climb to Marienberg FortressA 20 to 30 minute walk up through vineyards ends at the hilltop fortress, with a view over the old town. Check museum hours on the day.
  4. Taste Franconian wine in a BocksbeutelWürzburg's wines come in the flat Bocksbeutel bottle, and Silvaner is the signature white. Tasting rooms and wine bars are in the old town.
  5. Use Würzburg as the Romantic Road startRothenburg ob der Tauber is about 1 to 1.5 hours by train with a change at Steinach, so one night here fits before it.Rothenburg travel guide

Würzburg FAQ

Is Würzburg worth visiting?

Yes. The Residenz is a UNESCO baroque palace, and the old town, the bridge and the wine culture make a rounded one-day visit. It is also a practical rail hub for Franconia.

How many days do you need in Würzburg?

One day covers the Residenz, the bridge and the fortress walk. Stay one night for the bridge at dusk and a wine bar evening, and add a day for Rothenburg or Bamberg.

How do you get from Würzburg to Rothenburg?

By regional express to Steinach and a short shuttle train. It takes about 1 to 1.5 hours in total. Check the last return so you do not miss the shuttle.

What wine is Würzburg known for?

Franconian white, especially Silvaner, often in the flat Bocksbeutel bottle. Tasting rooms in the old town offer flights, and many wine bars serve by the glass.

Is Würzburg a good start for the Romantic Road?

Yes, the Romantic Road officially starts here and runs south to Füssen. By public transport, plan Rothenburg and Augsburg as stops and use rail rather than trying to follow the full route.
