Füssen

Neuschwanstein draws most visitors, but Füssen adds lakes, an old town on the Lech River and a long lute-making tradition.

Füssen is a town in the Allgäu region of southwest Bavaria, close to the Austrian border. It stands on the Lech River and is the last stop on the regional rail line from Munich. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles lie a short distance away, and the town is a practical base for reaching them.

The old town is small enough to walk in an afternoon. It has the Hohes Schloss above the river, St. Mang's Abbey, and a long history of lute making, which the local museum covers. Lakes including Forggensee, Alpsee and Bannwaldsee lie nearby for swimming, walking or boat trips in warm months. Winter brings snow to the surrounding Alpine hills, so the lakes and trails suit warm months better. Plan a day trip if you only want the castles, or stay one to two nights to see the town and lakes too.

Füssen in five

  1. Reserve Neuschwanstein before you leave MunichEntry is by guided tour only, booked online or at the Ticket Center in Hohenschwangau on the day, subject to availability. Summer tours sell out, so book ahead. How to visit Neuschwanstein
  2. Take the bus from Füssen station to HohenschwangauLocal buses run from the station to the ticket center in about 10 minutes. From there the castle is an uphill walk, a shuttle bus or a horse carriage away, so allow extra time.Munich to Neuschwanstein day trip
  3. Check the Marienbrücke is open before you hike upThe footbridge with the postcard view over the castle closes in snow and ice and sometimes for repairs. Check the municipality's notice for current access and avoid the walk in winter conditions.
  4. Stay a night to see Füssen itselfThe old town, the High Castle and the St. Mang abbey take half a day and are empty after the tour buses leave. A night also lets you see the castles in morning light.Füssen: day trip or overnight
  5. Pair Füssen with Garmisch-PartenkirchenThe Bavarian Alps are better as a loop than a single stop. Garmisch and the Zugspitze are the natural next base by regional train and bus.Garmisch-Partenkirchen travel guide

Füssen FAQ

Is Füssen worth visiting beyond Neuschwanstein?

Yes. The old town has a High Castle, an abbey and lakeside walks, and it is far calmer in the evening than the castle car parks. A night here also lets you start the castle tour early.

How do you get from Munich to Füssen?

By regional train in about 2 hours, sometimes with a change at Buchloe. A Bavaria day ticket usually beats separate fares for two or more people. From Füssen station a local bus runs to Hohenschwangau.

Do you need to book Neuschwanstein tickets?

Yes, in practice. Entry is by guided tour only, and same-day tickets at the ticket center are subject to availability. Book online ahead for summer, weekends and holidays.

When is Neuschwanstein least crowded?

Early morning on a weekday outside school holidays, and in the shoulder months. Winter is quiet but the Marienbrücke may be closed and paths icy, so check conditions before you go.

Can you visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in one day?

Yes, if you book both tours in advance and start early. The two castles are about a 20-minute walk apart. Allow time for the uphill walk or shuttle bus and the queue for your slot.
