Dresden is the capital of Saxony, on both banks of the Elbe in eastern Germany. It is nicknamed Elbflorenz, Florence on the Elbe, for its Baroque buildings and art collections. The bombing of February 1945 destroyed much of the inner city, and the Frauenkirche at Neumarkt was rebuilt between 1994 and 2005. It is now the city's best-known landmark.

Set aside two days. Spend the first in the Altstadt, where the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger palace complex and the Semperoper stand close together, and the Green Vault holds part of the Dresden State Art Collections. Use the second for the Äußere Neustadt, which largely survived the war. Stay in the Altstadt for the shortest walks to the sights. Add a day for Meissen, known for its porcelain, Moritzburg Castle or Saxon Switzerland National Park. Summer is the warmest season, with July averaging about 19 °C, and the Zwingerkonzerte und Mehr concerts take place in the Zwinger courtyard.

Dresden in five

  1. Book Green Vault and palace slots before you goThe Historic Green Vault admits visitors by timed ticket, and high-season slots go early. The Zwinger museums and the Residenzschloss are easier to add on the day, but check each opening day.Dresden in 2 days
  2. Climb the Frauenkirche dome early or lateThe dome gives views of the Altstadt and the Elbe from 67 meters, and the church itself is a place for quiet visits. Morning and late-afternoon light is best and queues are shorter outside midday.Frauenkirche visitor information
  3. Choose Altstadt or Neustadt as your baseThe Altstadt puts the sights outside the door and is quiet after dark. The Neustadt trades that for cafés, courtyards and nightlife across the Elbe, a 15 to 20 minute walk.Where to stay in Dresden
  4. Ride the S-Bahn to Saxon SwitzerlandThe S1 follows the Elbe through Pirna to Rathen and Bad Schandau in about 35 to 50 minutes. The sandstone rocks of the Bastei are the most-visited stop, and a day pack is enough.Saxon Switzerland
  5. Budget for the city accommodation taxDresden adds an accommodation tax to hotel and apartment stays, and some booking sites show it only at checkout. Compare the final price, not the headline rate.Tourist taxes in Europe

Dresden FAQ

Is Dresden worth visiting?

Yes, for the Baroque Altstadt, the museums and the Elbe setting. Much of the old center was rebuilt after 1945, so go for the Zwinger collections and the river as much as for the age of the buildings.

How many days do you need in Dresden?

Two days cover the Altstadt sights, a museum and an evening in the Neustadt. Add a third for Saxon Switzerland or Meissen. A single day works as a stop between Berlin and Prague.

Where should you stay in Dresden?

The Altstadt for a first visit, the Neustadt for cafés and evenings, and the area around the station for early trains and lower rates. Loschwitz suits a slow stay but not a one-night stop.

Is Dresden a good day trip from Berlin?

It works if you start early, since the train takes about 2 hours each way. You will see the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger but little else. An overnight lets you add the Neustadt and the Elbe at dusk.

What is the best time to visit Dresden?

May to June and September, for warm days and open-air evenings on the Elbe. December suits the Striezelmarkt Christmas market, one of Germany's oldest, though rooms rise in price.
