Kiel is the capital and largest city of Schleswig-Holstein, on the Baltic Sea in northern Germany, about 90 km northeast of Hamburg. It sits at the end of the Kieler Förde inlet and is the only German state capital on the sea. The harbor is a naval and shipbuilding center, and the Kiel Canal, the world's busiest artificial waterway, ends here at Kiel-Holtenau.

Kiel Week, held in the last full week of June, is the world's largest sailing event, with regattas, a ship parade and a fair. Ferries sail from Kiel to Gothenburg in Sweden and to Oslo in Norway. Spring and summer are the best months for the beaches north of town. Laboe, reached by ferry across the fjord, has a naval memorial and the submarine U-995, which you can visit.

Kiel FAQ

Is Kiel worth visiting?

Yes, if you like harbors and sailing, or you are catching a ferry to Scandinavia. It is not a classic old-town city: much of it was rebuilt after the war. The water is the draw.

When is Kiel Week?

Usually the last full week of June. Check the official calendar before booking, because dates move slightly each year and rooms sell out.

How do you get from Hamburg to Kiel?

Take a regional train or IC from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof; the ride takes about 1.3 hours. Trains are frequent, and a Schleswig-Holstein day ticket works for several travelers on regional services.

Can you take a ferry from Kiel to Norway?

Yes. Overnight ferries run to Oslo and Gothenburg from Kiel's terminals. Check each operator's schedule, check-in time and cabin rules before you book.

How many days do you need in Kiel?

A day covers the harbor, the maritime museum and a ferry to Laboe. Two days add the Holtenau canal locks or a coastal cycle ride along the Baltic.
