Oman

Oman suits travelers who want forts, mountain towns, desert dunes and a coastal capital, best covered by car.

Oman is a country on the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, with Muscat as its capital and largest city. The Musandam peninsula, on the Strait of Hormuz, is cut off from the rest of the country by UAE territory. Travelers come for forts and old inland towns such as Nizwa and Bahla, the Hajar Mountains, a gravel desert with dry river valleys that can fill quickly after rain, and turtle nesting at Ras al-Jinz.

Oman suits a road trip more than a single-city stay, because the main sights are spread out and many lie inland. Muscat is a practical base for the coast and its old forts, while the Hajar Mountains and the Sharqiya Sands are easiest by car. The cooler months, roughly October to April, are the most comfortable, since summer heat in Muscat and northern Oman averages 30 to 40 °C. Allow about a week for the capital and the north, and more if you add Salalah in Dhofar.

Five things to know before Oman

  1. Check the regional travel advice before you book

The UK does not advise against travel to Oman but warns of flight cancellations and airspace closures since Iranian strikes began across the region in July. Read the current UK and US advice and your insurance terms. UK travel advice

  2. Enter visa-free for 14 days, or get an eVisa for longer

British citizens can stay up to 14 days without a visa; other passports differ, so check Oman's official portal. For longer, apply for a tourist eVisa. Carry a return ticket, a hotel booking and travel health insurance. Check your passport

  3. Rent a 4x4 for the mountain roads

FCDO says desert and mountain road trips can be dangerous unless you are in a well-equipped 4-wheel-drive vehicle. Ask your rental company and hotel what the road to Jebel Akhdar and the tracks to Jebel Shams allow for your vehicle. The Hajar Mountains

  4. Cover shoulders and knees away from the beach

Modest dress is expected in towns, souqs and villages, and women cover their hair to visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which opens to visitors in the morning. Muscat

  5. Plan Musandam around the UAE border

Musandam is cut off from the rest of Oman by the UAE. You fly to Khasab or drive in through a UAE border post, so check that your visa and rental car allow the crossing. Musandam

Oman FAQ

Do I need a visa for Oman?

British citizens can stay up to 14 days without a visa, and the foreign ministry says nationals of designated countries get the same 14-day entry. Check your passport on Oman's official portal, and apply for a tourist eVisa for longer stays.

How many days do I need in Oman?

Seven to ten days covers Muscat, Nizwa and the Hajar Mountains, a night in the Wahiba Sands and the coast to Sur. Add two or three days for Musandam.

Can I drive in Oman with my home license?

Many rental companies accept licenses from the US, UK, EU and Australia for short visits. Check with the rental company, and ask whether an international driving permit is needed for your license.

Is alcohol available in Oman?

Yes, in licensed hotels and restaurants. It is not sold in ordinary shops, and drinking in public is against the law.

When is the best time to visit Oman?

October to March in Muscat and the north. The southern Dhofar region around Salalah is green and cooler during the khareef monsoon from late June to September.
