Salalah

Salalah is the capital and largest city of Dhofar governorate, on the Arabian Sea coast of southern Oman, and the country's third-largest city. Frankincense and incense shaped its history. The city was most prosperous in the 13th century through the incense trade, and its markets, including Al-Husn Souk, still sell frankincense, incense, traditional crafts, and gold and silver. The ancient site of Al-Balid has a fort, port remains, mosques and cemeteries.

Many visitors come for the khareef, roughly June to September, when the brown landscape turns green and waterfalls flow in the mountains. July and August are often cloudy and foggy with little rain, and summers are cooler than in northern or inland Oman. Salalah International Airport has domestic flights from Muscat and some international flights, and Oman Air runs about five flights a day from Muscat. Long-distance buses link the city with Muscat, Nizwa, Al-Buraimi and Dubai. Hilton Salalah offers free airport transfers, and the Crowne Plaza resort sits about 2 km from the city center. Taxis are orange and white, and fares run from about half a rial to 2 rials depending on distance.

Salalah FAQ

When is the best time to visit Salalah?

For mist, green hills and days of 20 to 28 degrees C, the ministry points to khareef, June 21 to September 21. For clear skies and beach days, choose winter from October to April. September and October bring As-Sarb, when the fog lifts but the hills stay green.

How far is Salalah from Muscat?

The ministry puts Dhofar about 1,000 km from Muscat, so most visitors fly. Salalah Airport's airline list shows Oman Air and SalamAir flights to Muscat. Check the current schedule before you plan a day around a flight.

Do I need a rental car in Salalah?

Not for the city, but the springs, wadis, Mughsail and the east are spread out, and the airport itself advises booking a car in advance, especially SUVs. Otherwise use taxis with a fare agreed at the taxi office, or a guided tour.

Is it safe to swim near the Al Mughsail blowholes?

Treat the blowholes as a viewpoint and keep back from the rock edge, since they erupt when the sea is rough. FCDO links to Royal Life Saving Society water-safety advice; check local conditions before you enter the water.

How much is a taxi from Salalah Airport to the city?

The airport lists OMR 7.000 one way and OMR 10.000 two-way for Salalah city center, with higher fares for Taqah, Mirbat and farther places. The taxi office confirms the fare and gives you a slip before you ride.
