Musandam is a mountainous peninsula at the northern tip of Oman, above the Strait of Hormuz. Its name, Ruus Al Jibal, means Capes of the Mountains, and the peninsula is the northernmost part of the Western Hajar Mountains. Most of the land rises to peaks of about 2,000 m, with a narrow coastal plain that widens southward toward Ras Al Khaimah. People go for the fjord area around Elphinstone Inlet and for Khasab, one of the main towns on the Omani side.

Most of the peninsula belongs to Oman's Musandam Governorate, but the northern part of Ras Al Khaimah and parts of Dibba belong to the UAE. Moving between the two sides means crossing an international border, so allow time for passport checks. Inland, you find Wadi Bih, the largest wadi in Musandam, and Jebel Harim, the highest mountain. Winters can be fairly cool in the mountains, so bring a layer if you plan to drive the high roads. A few days is a practical length for a trip built around the coast and the mountains.
