Al Hamra is a town in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of northern Oman, where the Hajar Mountains meet the plains below Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in the country. Its old quarter is made of mud-brick houses, narrow lanes and date palm gardens, and the town is a practical base for reaching the canyon rims above it.

Travelers come for the mountain walks and the villages around them. Misfat Al Abriyeen, a stone village built into the slope, is one of the best-known stops nearby, and the Nakhur trail is a walking route through the wadi. Al Hamra suits independent travelers with a rental car, hikers, and anyone adding a mountain stop to a route through Nizwa. Plan two to three nights and visit from about October to April, when the weather is cooler. Dress modestly when you walk through the villages.

Al Hamra in five

  1. Use Al Hamra as the gateway to Jebel ShamsThe ministry says Al Hamra is home to Jabal Shams, Oman's tallest peak, over 3,000 meters. Base here or in Nizwa and head up early for the canyon rims and cooler air.Jebel Shams guide
  2. Walk the Nakhur trailThe ministry describes the Nakhur trail running from the village of Al Khatim to the distant homes of Al Sab, with views year-round and occasional snow on the peaks in winter.
  3. See Wadi Al Nakhr village and Hasat Bin SaltThe ministry points to Wadi Al Nakhr village and its wadi, the Al Alamin viewpoint and Hasat Bin Salt, a large ancient rock with engraved human faces.
  4. Add Misfat Al Abriyeen and Al Hoota CaveThe ministry places Misfat Al Abriyeen about 1,000 meters up, with gardens, walking trails and heritage inns, and Al Hoota Cave on the way, home to blind fish in an underground lake.
  5. Dress modestly in villagesFCDO says to cover the tops of your arms and legs below the knee in public areas, and not to photograph people without permission.UK travel advice

Al Hamra FAQ

What is Al Hamra known for?

The ministry describes it as a mix of mountain and plain at the foot of Jabal Shams, with the Nakhur trail, the Al Alamin viewpoint, Wadi Al Nakhr village and the engraved rock Hasat Bin Salt. It is a base for the high canyon rims.

Is Al Hamra close to Jebel Shams?

Yes. The ministry places Jabal Shams in the Al Hamra area. The summit is over 3,000 meters, so the air up there is much cooler than in town; bring a layer and start early.

Is Misfat Al Abriyeen worth visiting?

The ministry highlights its lush gardens, walking trails and heritage inns at about 1,000 meters, with parking nearby so you can leave the car and walk. Dress modestly and ask before photographing people.

Can you see Al Hoota Cave from Al Hamra?

The ministry places Al Hoota Cave on the way to Misfat Al Abriyeen, with rock formations and an underground lake with blind fish. Check opening hours and any booking rules with the cave before you go.

When should you visit Al Hamra?

November to March for comfortable days; the town area is hot from May to September. Mountain trips above it are cooler, but FCDO warns that extreme heat has caused deaths in Oman, so start early in warm months.
