Jebel Shams

Jebel Shams is Oman's highest mountain, and visitors come for rim walks above Wadi Ghul and air that runs cooler than the desert below.

Jebel Shams is Oman's highest mountain, rising to over 3,000 meters in the Hajar Mountains of the Al Dakhiliya region. It sits above the village of Al Hamra. Its rim trails overlook Wadi Ghul, a deep canyon often called the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Up here the air runs cooler than on the desert roads far below.

The trip suits hikers and anyone who wants big canyon views in a single day. Go in the cooler months, roughly October to April, and start early, before the heat builds in the lowlands. Bring a layer, since the rim is cooler than the lowlands. Skip the mountain in rain, because wadis can flood and the rim gets slippery. Plan a half day to a full day, and if you have time, pair the visit with nearby Jebel Akhdar.

Jebel Shams FAQ

How high is Jebel Shams?

The ministry's governorate guide describes Jabal Shams as Oman's tallest peak, standing over 3,000 meters. The canyon-rim viewpoints most visitors reach are lower than the summit, but the air is still much cooler than in the lowlands.

Is Jebel Shams worth a day trip from Muscat?

The ministry puts the mountains roughly a two-hour drive from Muscat, so a long day is possible, but it leaves little time for a walk. A night in the area lets you start early before the heat and the day-trip groups.

Can you hike Jebel Shams in summer?

It is cooler than the lowlands, by up to 15 degrees C according to the ministry, but FCDO warns that extreme heat has caused deaths in Oman. Start at first light, carry plenty of water and avoid midday exposure.

Is there rock climbing or rappelling at Jebel Shams?

Yes, the ministry lists Jebel Shams among the best places for rock climbing and rappelling and advises watching the weather closely. Use a licensed operator with safety gear unless you are an experienced climber.

Do you need a 4x4 for Jebel Shams?

FCDO advises a well-equipped four-wheel drive for mountain road trips in Oman. Road conditions vary, so ask your rental company and your accommodation about the final stretch before you set out.
