Central Vietnam is the stretch of coast and hills between Hanoi in the north and Saigon in the south. Most trips start in Hue or Da Nang. Hue was the capital of the Nguyen dynasty until 1945, and its walled and moated Imperial City still shows the scale of that court. South of Da Nang, the merchant houses of Hoi An's old town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hai Van Pass climbs over the sea between Hue and Da Nang, and inland, Phong Nha-Ke Bang has river caves in limestone karst. Bach Ma National Park, a day trip from Hue, has forest trails.
Five to seven days covers a city, a beach stop and one day in the national parks. Hue to Da Nang by road or rail takes a few hours, and Da Nang has the airport. The driest stretch runs roughly from February to August, the best time for beaches and hiking. From September to December, storms and flooding can close roads and cancel tours, so leave a spare day in the plan.
Central Vietnam in five
- Pick two bases, not fourDa Nang and Hoi An sit close together, while Hue is a separate stop to the north. Two nights in each of two bases beats one night in four, since transfers eat the day.Hue
- Avoid October to January for a beach tripHoi An's national tourism page lists rainy days and several storms in those months. For beach and boat days, aim for March to May and check the forecast before booking nonrefundable boats.Best time to visit Vietnam
- Take the train or road over Hai Van PassThe stretch between Hue and Da Nang is the scenic one, by rail or by road along the coast. Book a day seat or a car with a driver, and skip the overnight train if you want the view.Da Nang travel guide
- Add one nature day, not threeBach Ma National Park gives cool forest trails and waterfalls, a break from the coast. The Cham Islands give a boat day. Choose one so the trip does not become a series of transfers.Bach Ma National Park
- Use An Bang for beach timeHoi An's beach is a short ride from the old town and suits a half day or a beach stay. Compare it with Da Nang's own long beach by how far you want to travel. An Bang Beach

How many days do you need in Central Vietnam?
Five to seven days covers two or three bases. A good split is Hoi An and Da Nang together, then Hue, with one nature or boat day. Add days only if you want slower mornings or a flood-season buffer.
When is the best time to visit Central Vietnam?
March to May is the usual best window: dry, warm and calm seas. June to August is hot, and October to January brings storms and flood risk, especially around Hoi An and Hue.
Is Hoi An or Da Nang better as a base?
Hoi An for old-town charm and evenings, Da Nang for the airport, bigger beaches and city amenities. They are close, so many trips use one as the base and visit the other on a day trip.
How do you get between Hue and Hoi An?
By road with a car and driver, which lets you stop at the Hai Van Pass, or by train to Da Nang and a short transfer on. Flights to Da Nang suit longer legs from Hanoi or Saigon.
Is Hue worth a night on a Central Vietnam trip?
Yes, if you want the imperial Citadel and tombs, which Hoi An and Da Nang do not offer. It is a separate stop to the north, so give it two nights and travel the Hai Van Pass by road or rail.
