Tu Hieu Pagoda

Visit Tu Hieu Pagoda in Hue, an active monastery in a pine forest with lotus ponds, Nguyễn Dynasty eunuch tombs and ties to Thich Nhat Hanh.

Tu Hieu Pagoda is an active Buddhist monastery in a pine forest in Thủy Xuân, a few kilometres outside Hue. Founded in 1843, it is known as the root temple of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, who was ordained here as a novice. Walk through the shaded grounds to see the lotus ponds, courtyards and tombs of Nguyễn Dynasty eunuchs. You may also hear monks chanting or see them following their daily routines. The quiet setting suits a slow visit and a moment of reflection.

A monastery founded in 1843

Tu Hieu Pagoda

Tu Hieu Pagoda began in 1843, when the monk Nhat Dinh came to the area to practise in seclusion and care for his ailing mother. The temple’s name, bestowed by Emperor Dực Tông five years later, joins the ideas of compassion and filial duty.

The pagoda remains an active monastery. Monks live and practise here, and you may see them going about their daily routines or hear chanting during prayer. This is a working religious site, so a quiet, considerate visit is appropriate.

Architecture and grounds

A tree-lined path leads through the pine forest to the pagoda. Its architecture draws on Hue’s 19th-century royal style, with traditional tiled roofs and carved dragon and phoenix motifs. A large Buddha is housed in the temple.

The grounds include shaded courtyards, lotus ponds and tombs. Among them are the resting places of eunuchs who served the Nguyễn Dynasty. Take time to walk around rather than treating the pagoda as a quick photo stop; the paths and pond provide quiet places to pause.

Thich Nhat Hanh’s root temple

Tu Hieu is closely connected with Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village tradition. He was ordained here as a novice in 1942, when he was sixteen, and later became the seventh abbot in the temple’s lineage. The pagoda is known as his root temple.

After years away from Vietnam, including a period of exile, he returned to live at Tu Hieu. His connection gives the site meaning for people familiar with his teachings, while the monastery’s daily practice remains part of the visit for everyone. You do not need to follow Buddhism to appreciate the calm setting, but it is best approached as a place of worship rather than simply a landmark.
