Hoi An is a ward of Da Nang city in central Vietnam, created in June 2025 when several former wards and a commune of the old Hoi An city were merged. Most visitors come for the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site of yellow merchant houses, narrow lanes and lanterns that light the streets after dark. Its tailors make clothes to measure. The town grew as a trading port on the Hoai River, a branch of the Thu Bon, and that history still shapes its streets.
Two or three days is enough to walk the Old Town, take a boat trip on the river and visit Cam Nam island across the water. The drier months, roughly February to August, are the easiest time to visit. Autumn rains often flood the streets from October to December, so check conditions before you book. The Cam Nam sticky corn festival falls on the 16th day of the first lunar month, usually in late winter or early spring, so it is worth timing a stop around it.
