My Son is a group of partly ruined Hindu temples in central Vietnam, built mainly by the Champa kings of the Cham people. The temples stand in a valley about 2 km wide, ringed by mountains, in Thu Bồn commune, Da Nang city. Shiva is the main deity, worshipped under local names, and the temples were used for ceremonies and as burial places for kings, religious leaders and national heroes. At its peak the site held over 70 temples and tombs.
Most temples are red brick. Bombing in August 1969 during the Vietnam War destroyed most of the architecture, so expect ruins more than intact towers. My Son is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1999. It lies about 40 km by road from Da Nang city center and about 36 km south of Hội An, which makes it a day trip from either base. Unexploded land mines remain in the surrounding area, so stay on marked paths. The Museum of Cham Sculpture in Da Nang holds many pieces taken from the site.
