Split is Croatia's second-largest city, on the eastern Adriatic coast and the main city of Dalmatia. Its old town sits inside Diocletian's Palace, which Emperor Diocletian began in 293 and which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Inside the walls you can see the Peristyle, the Temple of Jupiter and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, which occupies the emperor's mausoleum and has a 12th-century bell tower about 57 m tall. Marjan, a wooded hill park at the western end of the peninsula, has a lookout over the old town.
Split is also the base for island trips. The port runs ferries to Brač, Hvar, Šolta and Vis. Klis Fortress, about 11 km from the center, gives wide views over the city, its harbor and the islands. Summers are hot and moderately dry, and winters are mild and wet, though the bura wind can make cold days feel colder.
Split in five
- Book island catamarans in summerFast boats to Hvar, Brač and Vis sell out on summer weekends. Buy online and check which harbor pier you leave from.
- Cover up in the old townSplit fines people walking the old town in swimwear or shirtless. Keep beachwear for the beach.
- Take the airport shuttle busThe airport is in Kaštela, 20 km from Split and 6 km from Trogir, according to its own page. A shuttle bus links it with Split's main bus station through the day; check the operator's timetable for your flight.
- Walk up Marjan hillSteps from the Varoš district climb to viewpoints over the town and islands in about 20 minutes, with pine woods and swimming coves beyond.
- Sleep near the harbor before an early boatIsland boats leave early and the ferry port sits beside the old town. A night in or near the palace saves a dawn transfer, and makes Hvar easy to reach.Hvar

Is Split worth visiting or just a ferry port?
It is worth a day or two. The palace is a lived-in old town, not a ruin, and the Riva and Marjan hill are good for evenings.
Can you visit Plitvice from Split?
It is a long day: about 2.5–3 hours each way by car. Zagreb or Zadar is a better start, or stay near the park.
How do I get from Split to Hvar?
Catamarans reach Hvar town in about an hour. Car ferries go to Stari Grad in about 2 hours, then a bus runs to Hvar town.
How many days do you need in Split?
Two days cover the palace, the Riva and Marjan hill. Add one or two for a day trip to Hvar, Trogir or Krka. If you only pass through for a ferry, an evening and a morning are enough.
When is the best time to visit Split?
May, June, September and early October combine swimming weather with fewer crowds. July and August are hot, with ferries and rooms at their busiest. Winter is mild and wet, with a reduced island timetable.
