Dubrovnik is a walled city on Croatia's Adriatic coast, in the southern region of Dalmatia. Its old town sits inside stone walls, and the Stradun, the main street, runs from the Pile Gate to the Old Port. The city was a maritime republic in the Middle Ages, and its churches, palaces and fortifications show that history. Most visitors come for the walls and the view over red roofs to the sea.
The old town is small enough to walk in a day, but it gets crowded when cruise ships are in port, so plan your visits to the main sights for early or late in the day. Dubrovnik suits a stay of two or three days, with more time if you want day trips to Lokrum island, Cavtat or Kotor in Montenegro. Swimming is best from late spring to early autumn. Plan at least two full days to see the walls, the old town and one island.

How much does it cost to walk the Dubrovnik city walls?
Adult tickets start at €40, bought at the entrances or online. The full circuit is about 2 km and takes 1.5–2 hours at a photo-stopping pace.
When is Dubrovnik least crowded?
May, June, late September and October have warm weather and fewer visitors. On any day, early morning and evening are calmest.
Can I swim in Dubrovnik?
Yes, from rocks and small beaches below the walls, at Banje beach by Ploče Gate, in Lapad and on Lokrum. The sea is warmest from July to September.
How many days do you need in Dubrovnik?
Two days cover the walls, the old town and the cable car. A third lets you add Lokrum or Cavtat and a proper swim, and a fourth suits Kotor or the Elafiti islands.
Is Dubrovnik expensive?
It is among Croatia's priciest coastal stops, especially for rooms inside the walls in July and August. Lapad and Ploče cost less, and May, June, September and October bring lower rates and cooler walking.
