Cavtat is a small harbor town on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, a short drive south of Dubrovnik. Palm trees line the waterfront, and boats tie up along the promenade. The best-known sight is the Račić family mausoleum, designed by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The painter Vlaho Bukovac was born in the town, and his birth house is one of the places to see here. Dubrovnik airport is also a short drive away.
Cavtat suits travelers who want quiet evenings by the water and a base for day trips. You can stay here, spend a day in the old town of Dubrovnik, and come back to the slower pace of the harbor. Late spring and early autumn suit a visit best: the weather is warm and the summer crowds have thinned. Two nights covers the mausoleum, the Bukovac house, the waterfront and a day in Dubrovnik. Three nights leaves time for a swim and a slower pace.
Cavtat in five
- Visit the Račić mausoleum and the Bukovac houseThe mausoleum of the Račić family, by Ivan Meštrović from 1922, stands in the St. Rocco cemetery on the Rat peninsula. Bukovac's house shows a 19th-century Dalmatian townhouse. Check hours with the Konavle museums.Museums of Konavle
- Fly into Dubrovnik and sleep hereDubrovnik's airport is at Ćilipi, in the Konavle area, so Cavtat is a short transfer from the plane. It suits a first or last night without entering the old town.Dubrovnik
- Plan the Dubrovnik leg by boat or busSeasonal boats and local buses link the town with Dubrovnik. Check the current timetable and the last return, since evenings out in the city end earlier than you expect.
- Add Konavle on a SundayThe tourist board lists Sunday morning folklore performances at Ćilipi, a short drive from town. Pair them with the Konavle valley and its mills and fortress.
- Allow time at the border if you cross to MontenegroMontenegro is outside the Schengen area, so day trips to Kotor Bay mean border checks, and non-EU visitors are registered in the EES. Read the guide before you plan the day.EES explained

Is Cavtat worth visiting?
Yes for a calm harbor stroll, two small cultural sites and an easy base near the airport. It is not an event town, so go for the waterfront and the Konavle countryside rather than nightlife.
Is Cavtat or Dubrovnik a better base?
Dubrovnik puts the old town and walls on foot, but is crowded in summer. Cavtat is calmer, with the city a boat or bus ride away. Choose by how many evenings you want in the city.
How far is Cavtat from Dubrovnik airport?
It is a short drive, since the airport lies at Ćilipi in the same Konavle area. That makes it a good first or last night around a flight, with a taxi or pre-booked transfer.
What is the Račić mausoleum?
A family mausoleum by Ivan Meštrović, built in 1921–22 on the Rat peninsula in the St. Rocco cemetery. It is one of Cavtat's main cultural stops, along with the Bukovac house.
Can you day trip to Montenegro from Cavtat?
Yes, by road, but Montenegro is outside Schengen, so expect border checks in both directions and bring your passport. Non-EU visitors are registered in the EES on entry to Croatia, so allow extra time.
