Trogir is a small walled town on an island linked to the Croatian mainland by a bridge, a short drive from Split on the Dalmatian coast. Its old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Inside the walls, narrow stone streets lead past Venetian-era palaces to the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, whose west portal was carved by Master Radovan in 1240. Most sights sit within a few blocks and can be walked without a map.

Trogir works well as a short visit. Day trips from Split by bus are the simplest option, or you can stay one night near Split Airport before or after a flight. Allow half a day for the old town, or a full day if you add a swim and a walk along the waterfront, since the beaches are close enough to fit into the same day. Spring and early autumn are the easiest seasons, because July and August bring the most heat and crowds.

Trogir in five

  1. Use a night here as an airport bufferSplit Airport is 6 km from Trogir and 20 km from Split, and public bus lines to both stop at the airport. A night in Trogir shortens a late arrival or an early flight, and it is a calmer start than Split.Split
  2. See the cathedral and Radovan's portalLocals call the Cathedral of St. Lawrence by the name of St. John, the town's patron saint. It took five centuries to build, and the 13th-century portal by Radovan is the masterpiece of Croatian medieval art according to the tourist board.
  3. Plan half a day, not a full oneThe tourist board says the main sights lie a few minutes' walk apart and can be seen in one day: the cathedral, Kamerlengo Fortress, the Tower of St. Mark, the Town Lodge and the town museum.
  4. Walk to a town beachThere is no beach in the old center. Two town beaches sit about ten minutes' walk away, one on Čiovo and one at Brigi, and most beaches lie around Arbanija on Čiovo.
  5. Leave luggage near the bus stationLockers at the bus station and a second storage point about 50 m toward Seget, beside the fish market, let you walk the island without bags between a morning flight and an afternoon check-in.

Trogir FAQ

Is Trogir worth visiting?

Yes for a half day or night. The old town is small, walkable and rich in stone architecture, and it works well beside Split's airport.

How many days do you need in Trogir?

Half a day covers the cathedral, the fortress and the waterfront. One night adds an evening in the lanes and a morning before the crowds. A second night is rarely needed.

Is Trogir a good day trip from Split?

Yes. Buses link Split and Trogir, and the airport sits between them, so you can combine the visit with an arrival or departure. Go early or late in summer to avoid the tour groups.

Is Trogir or Split better to stay in?

Trogir is smaller, quieter and close to the airport. Split has the island ferries, more restaurants and a bigger choice of rooms. Choose Trogir for a calm start, Split for transport links.

Does Trogir have a beach?

Not in the old center. Two town beaches are about ten minutes' walk away, and the larger beaches are around Arbanija on Čiovo, so plan a short walk or a ride.
