Šibenik is a historic port town in central Dalmatia, Croatia, where the Krka river meets the Adriatic. King Peter Krešimir IV first mentioned it in 1066. It was the largest city on the eastern Adriatic coast until a plague epidemic in the mid-1600s. Its main landmark is the Cathedral of St James, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, built entirely of stone between 1431 and 1535.

St Michael's Fortress stands on the hill where the town began, and St Nicholas Fortress sits on Ljuljevac island at the harbor entrance. Krka National Park lies about 18 km north, and the Kornati archipelago, with about 150 islands, lies to the west. Šibenik has no airport. Split Airport is about 50 km away and Zadar Airport about 70 km. The Adriatic Highway and a local railway link the town, and ferries serve the nearby islands.

Šibenik FAQ

Is Šibenik worth visiting?

Yes, for a stone old town, a UNESCO cathedral and four fortresses without Split's crowds. It is also the practical base for Krka, so it earns at least one night.

How many days do you need in Šibenik?

One day covers the cathedral, the lanes and one fortress. Two days add Krka or a boat to the islands. Three days suit a slow loop with Zadar and Trogir.

Is Šibenik or Zadar better to stay in?

Šibenik is closer to Krka and quieter at night. Zadar is larger, with an airport and more island boats. Choose Šibenik for a short history-and-waterfalls stay.

How do you get from Split airport to Šibenik?

The tourist board says Split Airport is about 55 km away, 45 to 60 minutes by the A1 depending on traffic. A transfer, taxi or rental car works, or take a bus after reaching Split.

Why is Šibenik listed twice by UNESCO?

St. James Cathedral and St. Nicholas Fortress are separate inscriptions, which makes Šibenik the only city in Croatia with two. The fortress sits at the entrance to the St. Anthony Channel.
