Brač is the third largest island in Croatia, in the Adriatic off the country's southern coast within Split-Dalmatia County. Its limestone has been quarried and cut for building for centuries, and towns such as Pučišća grew up around the stone trade. Stone from Brač was used in the White House in Washington, DC. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Split, which docks at Supetar or Bol.

The island's high point is Vidova Gora, the highest peak of any Adriatic island, reached by road for views across the sea. The south coast has Bol and its Zlatni rat beach, a pebble spit whose tip shifts with the wind. Brač suits travelers who want small towns and swimming, with a few days of driving and walking and not much nightlife. The usual season runs from late spring to early autumn, and three days covers the main stops.

  3. Drive up Vidova Gora in the morningThe tourist board gives its height as 778 m, the highest of the Adriatic islands. The south side drops toward Bol, so a clear morning gives the widest view over the channel to Hvar.
  4. Spend three days, not a day tripBrač is large, with a coast of 175 km, so crossing it takes time. Two nights give you one base and the main beach, and a third day adds the north coast and Škrip.Brač in 3 days

Brač Island FAQ

How do I get from Split to Brač?

Take the Jadrolinija car ferry from Split to Supetar in 50 minutes, or a catamaran to Supetar or Bol. Choose the catamaran for Bol and the ferry if you bring a car.

Is Brač better than Hvar?

Brač is larger, quieter and better for beaches, trails and a car trip. Hvar has the livelier harbor town and more nightlife. Choose Brač for space and Bol's beach, Hvar for the evening scene.

How many days do you need on Brač?

Three days cover Supetar, Bol, Vidova Gora and one northern town without rushing. Two work if you stay in Bol. A day trip from Split sees only one town.

Do you need a car on Brač?

Not if you stay in Bol or Supetar and walk. A car or scooter helps for Vidova Gora, Škrip, Pučišća and quiet coves, since the island is large.

Where is the best beach on Brač?

Zlatni rat in Bol is the best known, a gravel spit about 500 m long whose tip shifts with wind and current. Supetar's Vlačica and Banj are easier family beaches near the ferry.
