Ukraine

Travelers go for Kyiv's medieval churches, Lviv's historic core, the Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea coast.

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe and the largest country lying entirely within Europe. It borders Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova and Russia, and the Black Sea washes its south coast. Kyiv, the capital, has Saint Sophia Cathedral, begun in the 11th century, with much of its original interior surviving. Lviv, in the west, has a historic core dating to its founding around 1256.

Beyond the cities, the land is mostly steppe and plains, rising to the Carpathian Mountains in the west, where Hoverla, at 2,061 meters, is the highest peak. The Danube Delta on the Romanian border is a wetland important for conservation. Summers are warm and the Black Sea coast draws summer visitors, while winters are cold. Late spring to early autumn is the usual season to go. Plan at least a week for one or two regions. Before you book, check current official safety advice. Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022, martial law remains in force, and Crimea and parts of the east and south are under Russian occupation.

Five things to know before Ukraine

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

The FCDO advises against all travel to most of Ukraine and against all but essential travel to Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi and Lviv. Missile and drone attacks continue. UK travel advice

  2. Check the visa-free window for your passport

The UK says British citizens can enter without a visa for up to 90 days in 180 until 30 January 2027. Expect an immigration card, possible fingerprints and proof of funds. Visas and entry

  3. Plan the route in overland, not by air

Do not assume flights. Routes in have mostly meant train or bus from Poland, Moldova, Romania or Slovakia; confirm options and border waits first, and use only official checkpoints.

  4. Follow air alerts and martial law rules

Take shelter at once when an air alert sounds; the FCDO suggests the Air Alert app. Curfews vary by region, and attacks on energy sites can cause blackouts.

  5. Read your insurer's war and advice clauses

The FCDO says your policy could be invalidated if you travel against its advice. Specialist cover for conflict zones has its own limits, so get terms in writing. Travel insurance

Ukraine FAQ

Is it safe to travel to Ukraine right now?

The FCDO advises against all travel to most of the country and against all but essential travel to the west, and says attacks happen across Ukraine. Read your own government's advice first.

Can I fly to Ukraine?

Do not assume you can. Check current airline and government information before planning anything. Overland entry from neighboring countries has been the main route, but waits and rules change.

Do British citizens need a visa for Ukraine?

Not for visits of up to 90 days in 180, the UK says, with that rule running to 30 January 2027. Other passports differ, so check with Ukraine's official sources before travel.

What should I do when an air raid alert sounds?

Go to shelter immediately. The FCDO recommends the Air Alert app for notifications. Martial law is in place and curfew rules vary by region, so follow local instructions.

Does travel insurance cover Ukraine?

The FCDO warns a policy could be invalidated if you go against its advice. Standard cover often excludes war, so read the exclusions and get any specialist terms in writing.
