Odesa is a port city on Ukraine's Black Sea coast, in the south of the country. Catherine the Great founded it in 1794. In the 19th century it grew into one of the main trading ports of the Russian Empire, drawing merchants and families from many backgrounds. The city's streets show that mix in its wide boulevards, courtyards and an opera house finished in the 1880s. Its long-standing communities include Jewish, Greek, Italian and Ukrainian residents. The seafront and port still shape how the city is laid out.
The Potemkin Stairs, a broad flight of steps down to the port, became famous after a scene in the 1925 film Battleship Potemkin. The main places to see are Deribasivska Street, Primorsky Boulevard and the beaches. Two to three days covers the centre and the coast. Before you book, check current travel advice for Ukraine: Odesa has been hit by air attacks since 2022, and conditions can change quickly.
