Moldova

Moldova is a wine country, home to the record-holding Mileștii Mici cellars, a 13th-century cliff monastery and the capital, Chișinău.

Moldova is a small, landlocked country in Eastern Europe, with Romania to the west and Ukraine on its other sides. Chișinău is the capital and largest city, the main cultural and commercial center, and home to about a third of the country's population in its metro area. Most of the land is rolling hills and plains, and the Dniester and Prut rivers mark much of the borders.

Moldova is best known for its wine. Mileștii Mici holds a Guinness record for the most bottles stored in one wine cellar, and the Cricova cellar has galleries stretching more than 120 km underground. The country has over 140 wineries, and vineyard tours run across it. Orheiul Vechi is a 13th-century monastery carved into a cliff face and still in use. Spring and autumn are mild and suit vineyard visits, while summers are warm, around 20 °C on average. Transnistria is an unrecognized region east of the Dniester that Chișinău does not control, so plan any visit to it with care.

Five things to know before Moldova

  1. Read the UK advice before you plan anything

FCDO's status is avoid all travel to parts of Moldova: it advises against all travel to Transnistria, outside government control. Insurance can be invalidated against that advice. This guide plans no Transnistria trip. UK travel advice

  2. Check the entry rule for your passport

Moldova's foreign ministry lists US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish citizens as visa-exempt. UK, Canadian, Australian and German sources quote up to 90 days; UK and Canadian advice asks for an onward ticket. Visa checker

  3. Base yourself in Chișinău

The capital holds the airport, the main boulevard, the museums and the transport links to the countryside. Most first trips sleep here and visit the wineries and Orheiul Vechi as day trips. Chișinău

  4. Choose a cellar and book it

Cricova and Mileștii Mici are the two big underground wine cellars near the capital, and each sets its own booking rules. The comparison covers hours, formats and how to reach them. Cricova or Mileștii Mici

  5. Carry cash alongside your card

FCDO says paying by card is now generally widespread but not always possible, particularly outside Chișinău. It recommends carrying some euros in cash in perfect-condition notes. Money and cards

Moldova FAQ

Do I need a visa for Moldova?

Moldova's foreign ministry lists US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish citizens as exempt; UK, Canadian, Australian and German sources quote up to 90 days. Others can apply for a transit or short-stay e-Visa online (40 euros, up to 10 days, extendable to 20).

Is Moldova safe to visit?

FCDO's status is avoid all travel to parts of the country, which means Transnistria; it does not apply that advice to the rest of Moldova. It still notes pickpockets, frequent police ID checks and regular small demonstrations in central Chișinău.

Can I plan a trip to Transnistria?

This guide does not. FCDO advises against all travel there, says its ability to help is extremely limited and warns that insurance may be invalidated. Read the current advice from your own government before you decide anything.

How do I get to Moldova?

Most visitors fly into Chișinău or cross overland from Romania. From the airport, public transport line 30 runs to the city (fare 7 MDL, 06:00 to 22:59 per the airport). Carry a return or onward ticket and a passport with the validity your government states.

How many days do I need?

Three days covers Chișinău, one winery and Orheiul Vechi. Add a day for a second winery or the countryside.
