Chișinău is the capital and largest city of Moldova, a country between Romania and Ukraine. It sits in central Moldova on the Bâc River, a tributary of the Dniester, and it is the country's business hub, where the national banks and most national media are based. Locals call it the White Stone City because many of its buildings are pale limestone. Valea Morilor park, in the south-west, was once the Komsomol lake park and has several lakes and small waterfalls.
The city mixes eras. The 19th-century Nativity Cathedral, the 1840 Triumphal Arch and Stalinist-style palaces stand near Soviet housing blocks and some Brutalist buildings. Wine is central to the city's identity, and Moldova's winemaking history goes back to at least 3,000 BC. The Cricova cellars, known for their limestone quarries, lie within the municipality and make a day trip for wine lovers. Spring and autumn are the mildest seasons, with temperatures usually between 16 and 24 °C. Summer is hot and humid, and winters are cold and windy, often below 0 °C.

- Check UK advice before planning anything eastFCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria, which lies outside Moldovan government control, and warns that insurance may be invalidated there. Chișinău itself is not covered by that advice; read the page before you book.UK travel advice
- Phone Cricova ahead; reserve Mileștii MiciCricova says tours are booked in advance by phone, and its tours do not wait for latecomers. Mileștii Mici lists guided visits with online booking on its own site. Both cellars are a short drive from the city.Cricova or Mileștii Mici
- Avoid political demonstrations in the centerFCDO notes regular small demonstrations in central Chișinău since autumn 2022, usually peaceful and policed, and tells visitors to stay away from them. Check the news before you plan an evening on the main boulevard.
- Carry a copy of your passport photo pageFCDO says police checks are frequent and officers may ask for ID on the street. Streets and paths can be poorly lit, so a small torch helps on late walks back.
- Use hotel or app taxis, not street cabsFCDO warns that official-looking taxis can be unlicensed and advises against sharing cabs with strangers or flagging them down. Ask your hotel to call one, or agree the price first when there is no meter.Getting around

Chişinău FAQ
How many days do you need in Chișinău?
Two days cover the boulevard, the museums, a park and one cellar visit. Add a third day for Orheiul Vechi or a second winery. Most of the sights sit close together, so a longer stay is a choice, not a need.
Is Chișinău safe for tourists?
FCDO points to street crime and pickpockets, especially in Chișinău, and to poorly lit streets and regular small demonstrations in the center. Keep valuables in a hotel safe, carry a passport copy and avoid demonstrations.
Do you need a visa for Chișinău?
FCDO says British passport holders can visit for up to 90 days in a 6-month period without a visa and must show a return or onward ticket. Other passports differ, so check the Moldovan foreign ministry list for yours before you travel.
Can you visit Transnistria from Chișinău?
FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria and says its ability to help there is extremely limited. Your insurer may also treat a trip there as against advice, so this guide does not plan one. Read the current advice yourself.
Can you pay by card in Chișinău?
Card payment is now widespread, but FCDO says you may not always be able to pay that way, especially outside the capital. Carry some lei for small buys and a little euro cash in clean notes; torn or marked notes can be refused.
