Chernivtsi is a city in southwestern Ukraine, close to the Romanian border on the Prut River. It was the historic capital of the Bukovina region and spent much of the 19th and early 20th centuries under the Habsburg monarchy, which left its mark on the streets and public buildings. Today the city is best known for the Residence of the Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans, a large former residence of Orthodox metropolitans built between 1864 and 1882 and listed by UNESCO in 2011.

Most trips fit into one to two days. You can cover the central streets and the university grounds on foot, and the Residence takes a few hours to see. The city suits travelers who like architecture, quiet streets and a slower pace, and who want to see a Ukrainian city with Central European roots. Visit from late spring through early autumn for the easiest walking and the most time outdoors.
