Romania

Romania suits travelers who want medieval towns, fortified and painted churches, Carpathian hiking and the Danube Delta's marshes and birds.

Romania lies in Central and Southeastern Europe. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, and the Black Sea lies to its southeast. Transylvania, in the center, is ringed by the Carpathian Mountains and holds medieval towns such as Sibiu, Brașov and Sighișoara, with fortified churches in villages nearby. Northern Moldavia has painted churches, and Maramureș has wooden ones. The Danube Delta, the largest continuous marshland in Europe, is a World Heritage Site where hundreds of bird species stop during migration.

Bucharest is home to the Palace of the Parliament, seat of the Romanian Parliament. The Black Sea resorts, including Mamaia, are the main summer destinations, while the ski areas around Brașov and the Prahova Valley are best known for winter sports. Summer suits the coast, and lowland summer heat can pass 35 °C. Romania has about 22,298 km of railway, the fourth-largest network in Europe, and 1,065 km of motorway completed by December 2023.

Five things to know before Romania

  1. Register in the EES on your first Schengen entry

Most non-EU visitors register a photo and fingerprints at no cost, and passports are no longer stamped. Romania counts toward the shared 90 days in 180, so allow extra time on arrival and before departure. EES explained

  2. See which entry rules apply to your passport

US, UK, Canadian and Australian visitors need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen; EU citizens enter on a valid ID card or passport. ETIAS is not yet in operation. Visa checker

  3. Carry your passport on Bulgarian and Hungarian crossings

The UK government says border guards check passports at land or river borders into Bulgaria or Hungary. Spain's foreign ministry adds that Romanian border police can run spot checks within 30 km of the border. Schengen 90 days in 180

  4. Pick one Transylvanian base, then add day trips

Brașov suits Bran and Sinaia, Sibiu suits a calmer old town and village churches, and Cluj-Napoca anchors the north. Trains link the cities; villages and passes are easier with a car. Transylvania planner

  5. Buy the rovinieta before you drive

The UK government says a rovinieta road toll is required on national roads, sold at border points and most petrol stations. Check CNAIR notices before the Transfăgărășan, and take care with bears on mountain routes. Renting a car abroad

Romania FAQ

Do I need a visa for Romania?

Not for short stays on a US, UK, Canadian or Australian passport: up to 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, shared with every other member country. You register in the EES at the border, and ETIAS is not yet in operation.

Does Romania use the euro?

No. The currency is the leu (RON), so exchange or withdraw lei and check whether a price is quoted in lei or in euros before you pay.

How many days do I need in Romania?

A week covers Bucharest, Sinaia and Brașov with Bran Castle as a day trip. Ten days adds Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca by train or car, and the Black Sea coast needs extra days.

When is the best time to visit Romania?

May, June, September and early October are warm without July and August heat, and the mountains are green. Winter suits skiing and Christmas markets, but check CNAIR before driving high passes such as the Transfăgărășan.

Do I need a car in Romania?

Not for Bucharest, Sinaia or Brașov, which sit on one rail line. A car or tour is better for villages, passes and monasteries. Read the road warnings in the UK government advice and buy the rovinieta toll before you drive.
