Constanța is Romania's largest Black Sea port and sits on the coast in the Dobruja region. Greek colonists founded it as Tomis, and the Roman poet Ovid spent his exile here. Roman remains are spread through the center, including a mosaic and the ruins of public baths, and a statue of Ovid stands on the square named after him. The seafront has Art Nouveau buildings, including the casino, facing the water.

Plan two to three days. Use one for the ruins and museums, and one or two for the coast. Mamaia, the resort strip north of the center, has long sandy beaches and hotels, and a short bus ride connects it to downtown. Summer is the season for swimming. May, June and September are quieter, and the old center is easier to walk without the crowds.

Constanţa in five

  1. Visit between June and September for the beachesMamaia and the southern resorts are built for summer, and many restaurants and hotels shut or thin out in winter. Outside summer, treat Constanța as a history stop with sea air.
  2. Start on the old Constanța peninsulaThe old center sits on a peninsula around Ovid Square, with the Roman Mosaic Edifice, the Genoese Lighthouse and the seafront promenade within a short walk. Check each site's official page for hours.
  3. Use Mamaia as a beach day, not a base for sightsMamaia is a resort strip north of the city, reached by bus, taxi or ride app. Stay in the old center for sights and evenings, and go to Mamaia for the day.
  4. Combine the coast with Bucharest by trainTrains and buses link Constanța with Bucharest. Check times and fares on the CFR Călători site, and book a seat in July and August, when beach traffic peaks.Bucharest travel guide
  5. Carry lei for beach-front kiosksCards work in hotels and restaurants, but smaller kiosks and beach bars often prefer cash in lei. Withdraw before you head to the sand.Money in Europe

Constanţa FAQ

Is Constanța worth visiting?

Yes for Roman history and the sea, less so if you expect a polished resort. Its old center is small, so most visitors add a beach day in Mamaia or a southern resort in summer.

When is the best time to visit Constanța?

June to September for beaches, May and September for warm weather with fewer crowds. Winter is quiet and many seasonal places close.

How do you get from Bucharest to Constanța?

By train, bus or car. Check times and fares on the CFR Călători site, and book ahead in July and August when beach traffic peaks.

Is Mamaia or Constanța a better base?

Constanța for sights and year-round life, Mamaia for beaches and nightlife in summer. Many visitors stay in the city and take a bus to the beach.

Can you visit the Danube Delta from Constanța?

It is a long day trip and most visitors base in Tulcea instead. Check tour operators for transport options before you commit.
