Wallachia sits in southern Romania, with the Lower Danube along its southern edge and the Southern Carpathians to the north. Romanians call it Țara Românească, meaning Romanian Land, and locals seldom use the name Wallachia, an outside label. The region covers about 77,000 square kilometers. Traditionally it is split into Muntenia to the east and Oltenia to the west, with the Olt River between them. Bucharest, the largest city, has been the capital since the late 17th century.

Visitors go for the old princely seats and monasteries. Curtea de Argeș has a cathedral built under Prince Neagoe Basarab, whose rule from 1512 to 1521 brought Renaissance influences. Târgoviște, a former capital, saw a night attack in 1462 on the Ottoman camp nearby, led by Vlad III. Along the Danube, Giurgiu, Brăila and Turnu Măgurele are river towns with their own history. The Southern Carpathians, also called the Transylvanian Alps, suit hiking and mountain walks.

Wallachia FAQ

What is Wallachia?

Wallachia is a historical region of southern Romania, south of the Carpathians, with Bucharest as its largest city. It is not a modern administrative unit, but it is widely used to describe the region.

Is Wallachia worth visiting?

Yes if you like monasteries, princely courts and quiet small towns, and less so if you want castles and Saxon towns, which are in Transylvania. It works well as a day trip from Bucharest.

Do you need a car in Wallachia?

Not for Sinaia, which has a train station. A car is far better for monasteries and small towns, which are poorly served by buses.

How is Wallachia different from Transylvania?

Wallachia lies south of the Carpathians and Transylvania to the north and west. Wallachia has monasteries and plains; Transylvania has Saxon towns, fortified churches and mountains.

When is the best time to visit Wallachia?

May to June and September to October are warm and pleasant. Summer can be hot on the plain, and winter is cold and gray, though monasteries are quiet.
