Sinaia is a mountain resort town in the Prahova Valley, in southern Romania, where the Carpathian forest gives way to the first ridges of the Bucegi Mountains. Its best-known sight is Peleș Castle, the summer residence that Carol I, Romania's first king, had built in the late 1800s. Visitors come for the castle's neo-Renaissance facade and carved wood interiors, and the town is also a base for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.
Sinaia suits travelers who want a castle visit and an easy mountain walk in the same trip. It makes a day trip from Bucharest or Brașov on the rail line through the valley, but an overnight leaves more time for the trails. Summer is the season for hiking, and winter brings snow to the ski slopes. One day for the castle and the town, with a second for a longer walk into the Bucegi, gives the main sights room.

- Check the 2026 closure datesPeleș is closed from 2 November to 1 December 2026 for cleaning and conservation, and Pelișor is closed from 28 September to 3 November 2026. Plan late autumn trips around them.
- Allow time for the walk up to the castleThe museum says it is an 800 m walk from the parking lot on a sloped alley, about 10 to 15 minutes, and recommends comfortable shoes. Arrive early to avoid queues and midday crowds.
- Combine Sinaia with Brașov, not Bucharest in a rushSinaia sits on the rail line between Bucharest and Brașov, so it works as a stop on the way. A night in Brașov is easier than a rushed day return from the capital.Brașov travel guide

Is Peleș Castle worth visiting?
Yes for the interiors and the setting, and it is one of Romania's most visited monuments. Tickets are timed and capped, so book a slot rather than turning up. Check the museum's official page for open days.
Is Peleș Castle open on Mondays?
No. The museum says Peleș and Pelișor are closed on Monday and Tuesday. It also lists closures in late 2026, so check the dates before you plan.
How do you get from Bucharest to Sinaia?
By train on the line to Brașov. Check current times and fares on the CFR Călători site, and buy tickets in advance for weekends and holidays.
Can you visit Sinaia as a day trip from Brașov?
Yes by train, but timed tickets for Peleș mean you must plan the slot. A night in Sinaia avoids the rush and leaves time for a Bucegi walk.
When is the best time to visit Sinaia?
June to September for hiking and green slopes, December to February for snow. Autumn is quiet and colorful, but castle closures can apply, so check dates.
