Brașov is a city of about 238,000 people in the Transylvania region of central Romania, and the seat of Brașov County. It sits in a basin on the inner curve of the Carpathians, at an average altitude of about 625 metres, with mountains on its southern and southeastern sides. Transylvanian Saxon settlers built the medieval old town below the Tâmpa mountain. Most visitors begin at Council Square, where Casa Sfatului houses the city history museum, then walk to the Black Church and to Catherine's Gate, the only original medieval city gate that survives.
The old town and a trip up Tâmpa can each fill a day. Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress and Prejmer Fortress are all day trips from the city, and the city is about 380 km from the Black Sea coast. Summers run about 22 to 27°C, and winters commonly range from −18°C to −2°C. Snow lies roughly 71 days a year, which suits skiing at Poiana Brașov, the most popular ski resort in Romania.

How many days do you need in Brașov?
Two days cover the old town, the Black Church, Tâmpa and Șchei. Add a third day for Bran Castle and Râșnov, or a fourth for Sinaia. Many visitors use Brașov as the single Transylvania base for four or five nights.
Is Brașov worth visiting?
Yes. It has a Saxon old town within easy reach of Bucharest, mountain scenery behind it and several castles within a short drive. It is busiest in summer and over Christmas.
Is Brașov or Sibiu better?
Brașov has more to do nearby and better transport links. Sibiu has a calmer, more elegant center. Choose Brașov as your base, and add Sibiu if you have a week and a car.
Can you visit Brașov as a day trip from Bucharest?
It is possible by train, but the travel eats the day. A night or two lets you see the Black Church and the old town without rushing. Check times on the CFR Călători site.
When is the best time to visit Brașov?
June, September and early October balance warm days and fewer crowds. Winter brings snow and skiing at Poiana Brașov, and December has Christmas markets. Summer is busy but pleasant at altitude.
