Lugano is the largest city in Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton of southern Switzerland, and the largest Italian-speaking municipality outside Italy. It sits on the northern shore of Lake Lugano. Italian is used for signs, services and schools, and German and English are common in tourism. Lugano is also Switzerland's third-largest financial centre after Zurich and Geneva, so banks share the streets with the holiday side of town. The lakeside old town leads to Parco Ciani, the city's main green space.

Most visitors come between spring and autumn, when the lake, festivals and open-air events are at their busiest. Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore are both reached by funicular and give wide views over the city and water. Boats from the lake serve Gandria, Morcote and Melide. The city also has culture to see, including the LAC arts centre, the MASI museum and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. Lugano is one of Switzerland's warmest and sunniest cities.

Lugano FAQ

Is Lugano worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a lake town with Italian food and mountains within a short funicular ride. The center is compact, so it works for a weekend, but it is less dramatic than the Bernese Oberland.

How many days do you need in Lugano?

Two days cover the lakefront, a funicular, Parco Ciani and a lake boat. Add a third for Gandria, Morcote or a day to Locarno.

Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore?

Brè runs from Cassarate and links to the Gandria walk. San Salvatore takes about 12 minutes from Paradiso and has a restaurant and museum at the top. It is closed from 9 November 2026 to 12 March 2027.

How do you get to Lugano from Zurich?

Under 2 hours by train, according to Lugano Region. Check your connection on the SBB timetable before you travel.

Should you stay in Lugano or Locarno?

Lugano for a bigger lake city with more restaurants and a station near the center. Locarno for a smaller town with a famous festival and the valleys behind it.
