St. Moritz is a resort town in the Upper Engadine valley, in the canton of Graubünden in southeastern Switzerland. It stands beside a lake, with mountain lifts a short way above the town. Corviglia and Muottas Muragl are two of the lift areas you can reach from town. The Bernina Express runs from St. Moritz to Tirano in Italy, so the rail line is a common trip for travelers heading south. The town hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, which is one reason it is known as a winter sports resort.
The season decides what you do here. In winter, most visitors plan around the lifts and ski runs. In summer, the same mountains suit hiking, and the train ride over the Bernina pass becomes the highlight. Check each lift's operating dates before you travel, because they change by season.
St Moritz in five
- Sleep two nights to unlock the lift offerEngadin Tourismus lists free use of up to 10 mountain railways in summer and autumn from the second night at participating hotels. Check that your hotel takes part before you book.
- Reserve the Bernina Express panoramic carA seat reservation on the Bernina Express is mandatory on top of the ticket. St. Moritz to Tirano takes about 2 hours 15 minutes; the late-2026 diversion dates are on the Chur page.Chur and the Bernina Express
- Take the regional train if you skip the panoramic carSeats on regional trains between St. Moritz and Tirano can be reserved for CHF 5 per person, and the Rhaetian Railway strongly recommends it. The ride covers the same UNESCO Bernina Line.
- Check which lifts are runningThe Engadin lifts work as separate systems: Corviglia, Corvatsch, Diavolezza and Lagalb, and Muottas Muragl. On 3 October 2026 the tourist site showed only some lifts running, so check operating status.
- Consider the Bernina Express Bus to LuganoThe Rhaetian Railway sells a Bernina Express Bus between Tirano and Lugano, so a rail trip can end in Ticino. Check the season and reservation rules on rhb.ch before you plan the link.Lugano

Is St. Moritz worth visiting in summer?
Yes, for lakes, mountain railways and trails, and for the Bernina Line. A two-night stay can unlock free lifts at participating hotels, which changes the cost.
How long is the Bernina Express from St. Moritz?
About 2 hours 15 minutes to Tirano, according to the Rhaetian Railway, and a seat reservation is mandatory on the Bernina Express. The longer run from Chur, and the late-2026 diversion, are covered in the Chur guide.
Is the Glacier Express worth it?
For a slow, scenic transfer between Zermatt and the Engadin, yes. It is an eight-hour ride, so treat it as a travel day. A Swiss Travel Pass covers the journey but not the seat reservation, which is charged on top.
When is the best time to visit St. Moritz?
January and February for skiing, July to September for hiking and lifts. Spring and late autumn are between seasons, when some lifts are closed.
Can you reach Lugano from St. Moritz?
Yes, by the Bernina Express to Tirano and then the Bernina Express Bus to Lugano. Check the bus season and reservation rules on the Rhaetian Railway site.
