Nepal

Nepal has eight of the world's ten highest mountains, royal squares in the Kathmandu Valley, and wildlife parks on the Terai plains.

Nepal is a landlocked country, mostly in the Himalayas, and Kathmandu is its capital and largest city. The country has eight of the world's ten highest mountains. Mount Everest, known in Nepali as Sagarmatha, rises to 8,848.86 meters above sea level. The main draws are the Annapurna trekking circuit, which starts from Pokhara; the old royal squares and temples of the Kathmandu Valley; and the wildlife parks of the Terai lowlands, such as Chitwan National Park.

Pashupatinath Temple, a major Hindu complex on the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, has open-air cremation platforms where cremations take place in public view. Lumbini, in the south, is the traditional birthplace of Gautama Buddha. The monsoon brings floods and landslides that close roads, so plan trips around it. Travel between hills and plains is slow, so allow extra days for transfers.

Five things to know before Nepal

  1. Get a tourist visa on arrival

Most passports can buy a tourist visa at Kathmandu airport, with a choice of stay length. Filling in the online form before you fly saves a queue. Visas and entry

  2. Check the licensed guide rule for your trek

Foreign trekkers must use a licensed guide in many national parks and conservation areas, and rules differ by area. Confirm yours before booking. Nepal Tourism Board

  3. Trek in autumn or spring

October and November have the clearest skies; March and April bring rhododendrons and some haze. The monsoon runs June to September.

  4. Carry cash into the mountains

ATMs thin out once you leave Kathmandu and Pokhara, and teahouses take rupees only.

  5. Check your insurance covers altitude

Look for helicopter evacuation and an altitude limit above your highest pass. Travel insurance

Rules for Nepal, checked
Check entry rules for your nationality on your government's travel advice page before you fly. Tourist visas are issued by Nepal's Department of Immigration.
Remove your shoes before entering temples and shrines, and ask before photographing people at the cremation sites at Pashupatinath.
Trekking in protected areas needs a national park permit and, on many routes, a TIMS card. Ask the Nepal Tourism Board which your route requires.
Antiques and religious objects need an export permit from the Department of Archaeology, so ask before you buy and keep the receipt.
Protests in September 2025 turned violent, so check your embassy's alerts and local news before you travel.

Nepal FAQ

Do I need a guide to trek in Nepal?

Many trekking areas require a licensed guide for foreign trekkers, but the rules differ by area and have changed recently. Ask your agency or the Nepal Tourism Board for your route before you book.

When is the best time to trek?

October and November for clear skies, March and April for rhododendrons. The monsoon, June to September, brings rain and leeches to the lower trails.

How many days should I give Kathmandu?

Three, before or after a trek: one each for Kathmandu's old town, Patan and Bhaktapur.

Do I need a visa for Nepal?

Most passports can buy a tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Filling in the online form first can save time. Confirm the current form and fees with the Department of Immigration before you fly.

How do I get around Nepal?

Tourist buses link Kathmandu with Pokhara and Chitwan, and short domestic flights cover Pokhara and the Lukla mountain strip. Mountain flights depend on weather, so leave a spare day.
