Bandipur

Bandipur

Bandipur is a slow, car-free hill town where old Newar houses, mountain views and short walks make a restful stop between Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Bandipur is a hill town in Tanahun District, Gandaki Province, in central Nepal. It sits on a ridge between Kathmandu and Pokhara and is reached by road from both. Its old core is a long, stone-paved main street lined with brick and timber houses built in the Newar style, with carved windows and tiled roofs. Vehicles are kept out of the old bazaar, so the street stays quiet during the day.

On clear mornings the ridge gives views north toward the high Himalaya. Visitors walk up to the Thani Mai temple above town and to the Siddha Gufa limestone cave a short distance away. Bandipur suits slow trips of one to three nights, with time for walking the old streets, sitting over a meal and watching the light change on the peaks. Autumn, roughly October to November, and spring, roughly March to April, are the clearest months. The monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and cloud.

    Bandipur FAQ

    Is Bandipur worth visiting?

Yes, if you want an old hill town with views and a slow pace. It suits a night or two between Kathmandu and Pokhara. Skip it if you want nightlife or large museums.

How many days do you need in Bandipur?

Two nights cover the old bazaar, the viewpoints and a temple walk. One night works if you are only passing through. Add a day for walking to nearby villages.

Can you visit Bandipur as a day trip from Kathmandu or Pokhara?

It is possible but tiring, since the road from either city is long and the final climb is slow. Stay at least one night to see the bazaar in the evening and at dawn.

    Are there ATMs in Bandipur?

Few, so withdraw enough cash in Kathmandu or Pokhara before you go. Card payment is not reliable in small guesthouses.

Can you see the Himalayas from Bandipur?

On clear mornings, yes, the high peaks can be seen from the hill. Haze and monsoon cloud hide them for much of the year, so the clear months are the best bet.
