Rhino and jeep on a forest road

Chitwan National Park

Nepal's oldest national park, known for one-horned rhinos and Bengal tigers, seen on jeep and jungle safaris through sal forest and grassland.

Chitwan National Park lies in the Terai lowlands of south-central Nepal, across parts of Nawalpur, Chitwan, Makwanpur and Parsa districts. It is Nepal's first and oldest national park, set up in 1973, and UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1984. The park covers 952.63 square kilometers, mostly sal forest, with grassland on about a fifth of the land and the Narayani-Rapti river system along its north and west edges.

Most people come for the rhinos and tigers. Chitwan has the largest population of one-horned Indian rhinoceros in Nepal, and Bengal tigers live in the prime habitat at the center. Gaurs and sloth bears also live here. Most visitors base themselves in Sauraha, at the eastern entrance, and join jeep or jungle safaris. Bharatpur, about 10 km from the main gate, has an airport with daily flights. Most of the annual rain, about 2,500 mm, falls during the monsoon from mid-June to late September. From mid-October, humidity drops and daily highs fall from about 36 °C toward 18 °C, which makes the post-monsoon months the more comfortable time to visit.

Chitwan National Park FAQ

Can I see tigers in Chitwan?

It is possible but rare. Rhinos, deer, crocodiles and many birds are much more likely.

How many days do I need in Chitwan?

Two nights. That gives you one full day inside the park, with an early morning and a late afternoon session.

How do I get to Chitwan from Kathmandu?

Tourist buses take about 5–7 hours to Sauraha. Flights to Bharatpur take about 20 minutes, then it is a short drive.

Are elephant rides still offered in Chitwan?

Some operators still offer them. Many travelers now choose jeeps, walks or canoes instead, and elephant rides inside the park have been reduced.

Is Chitwan safe for walking safaris?

Walks are done with licensed guides who brief you on what to do if a rhino approaches. Follow instructions exactly; jeeps and canoes are lower-risk choices.
