Nagarkot is a hill village in Nepal, about 30 km east of Kathmandu, in Bhaktapur District. It sits on a ridge at roughly 2,200 meters above sea level. On clear mornings, the Himalayan range stretches across the view, including Mount Everest, and that sunrise is the main reason to stay overnight. A day trip from Kathmandu misses it.
The village suits a short, slow trip. Walks run along the ridge and down to nearby villages. Changu Narayan temple, in Bhaktapur, is a common add-on for a day from Kathmandu. Stays range from guesthouses to larger hotels. Autumn, roughly October to November, usually gives the clearest skies, while the monsoon from June to September brings cloud and rain that often hide the peaks. Plan one or two nights for a sunrise and a day of walking.

Read the guideNagarkot FAQ
Is Nagarkot worth visiting?
Yes, if the Himalayan view at sunrise is why you go. The peaks are visible only on clear days, and cloud often hides them in the monsoon, so pick a dry season for the trip.
How many days do you need in Nagarkot?
One night covers the sunrise view and a slow afternoon. Stay two nights if you want a second chance at a clear morning, since cloud can wipe out the first one.
Can you see Everest from Nagarkot?
Yes, on clear days. Everest is one of the peaks in the view from the ridge, along with other high Himalayan summits, so check the forecast before you book.
Can you visit Nagarkot as a day trip from Kathmandu?
Yes, but you will miss the sunrise, which is the main reason to go. A day trip works for a walk and a meal, not for the view.
What can you buy in Nagarkot?
Nagarkot is a small village of lodges and restaurants, with few shops. Buy medicine, snacks and bottled water in Kathmandu or Bhaktapur before you go up.
