Everest region

Trekkers come for the trails through Sherpa villages and the view of the world's highest mountain from the high valleys of Khumbu.

The Everest region, also called Khumbu, is in northeastern Nepal on the Nepalese side of Mount Everest. It lies in Solukhumbu District in Koshi Province, and Nepalis also know it as the Sagarmatha region. Most of its people are Sherpa, and Kirat Rai (Khambu) people also settle here. The land climbs from about 3,300 meters (11,000 feet) to the summit of Everest at 8,848 meters, the highest point on Earth.

Most visitors come to trek. Lukla is the usual starting point, reached by a short flight, and the trail climbs through villages to Namche Bazaar, the main town and a common stop for acclimatization. Further on are Dingboche and Lobuche, and the Tengboche monastery, one of Nepal's best-known Buddhist monasteries, lies on the route. Sagarmatha National Park and its buffer zone cover the area between Lukla and Monju. Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) have the most settled weather.

  4. Check the guide rule before you bookNepal requires licensed guides on many treks. Confirm the current rule for the Khumbu with your agency or the tourism board.

Everest region FAQ

What permits do I need for Everest Base Camp?

The Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and a local Khumbu municipality permit. Trekking agencies usually arrange both and can confirm current fees.

How long is the Everest Base Camp trek?

About 12–14 days from Lukla and back, including two acclimatization days.

When is the best time to trek to Everest Base Camp?

October and November for clear skies, or April and May for warmer days. The monsoon, June to September, brings cloud and leeches lower down.

Do I need to be very fit?

You need to be comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day for two weeks. Altitude, not fitness, is what stops most people, so go slowly.

Can you do Everest Base Camp without a guide?

Guide rules have changed, so check the current requirement. Even where optional, a guide helps with route-finding and altitude decisions in bad weather.
