Trani is a seaport on the Adriatic coast of Puglia, in southern Italy, about 42 km north of Bari. Its Romanesque cathedral was begun in 1099 and consecrated in 1143, and it is built of the pale local limestone known as pietra di Trani. Frederick II founded the Swabian castle in 1233 to guard the harbor. The square in front of the cathedral is used for concerts, theater and opera, with the sea as the backdrop.
The old town has narrow streets and medieval arches. Parts of the former Jewish quarter, the Giudecca, keep their medieval layout, and Via Cambio runs down to the harbor, recalling its money-changers. In the Middle Ages the harbor was a departure point for crusaders. Plan a half day for the cathedral, the castle and a walk through the old town, or stay overnight to see the harbor in the evening. Summers are dry and sunny, with sea breezes that usually keep temperatures below 32 °C. Rain falls mostly in autumn and winter, so late spring and early autumn suit a visit best.

Is Trani worth visiting?
Yes for the cathedral beside the sea, the harbor and the lack of crowds. It is small, so it works as a half-day trip from Bari.
How do you get from Bari to Trani?
By regional train in about 35 to 50 minutes, or by car in about 45 minutes. Trains run frequently on the Adriatic line.
How long do you need in Trani?
Three to four hours cover the cathedral, the castle and the harbor. Stay a night for a seafood dinner and a quiet morning.
Is Trani better than Polignano a Mare?
Trani is calmer and cheaper with a cathedral on the water, while Polignano has dramatic cliffs and more crowds. Many visitors see Polignano for scenery and Trani for atmosphere.
Can you swim in Trani?
There are small beaches and rocky platforms near the harbor, but the sea is not the main draw. For beaches, head to the coast south of Bari or north toward Barletta.
